Need feedback for a pixel art image

#1 Post by Ryue » Sat Jul 30, 2016 3:01 am

Hi
For a few maps inside my game I'm trying to do a bit of pixel art images. I'm not sure how it looks/what could be done to do it better.
So my question here for a bit of feedback.

The image shall represent the map of a dark dirty alley where the dustbin is full of bumps and scratches and blood is coming from some of them and from under it.
Also there is a bullethole in the wall where a bit of blood is.

Image

Some things I noticed already:
-Bullethole is a bit off
-Bump doesn't look like a bump (right side of the dumpster)
-Scratches I'm not sure about (they are made by claws)
-Floor is a bit "tiled"
Although aside from the first part I'm not sure how to make it look better. Thus would be thankful for a few pointers there in addition to general critique.

Tnx (btw is my first try at pixel art since >10 years).

I'm no artist , but...is that blood coming out of the bullet hole?

No, like seriously, just send a pm and I'll respond what I think. I'm open to reading anything.

I wanted to portray there that the shot was a hit (but didnt finish it yet as the hole itself felt off)

Hi,
It seems a bit... clean maybe for pixel art. It looks more like basic graphics rather than capturing the elements that makes pixel art distinctive.

The line work is very fine so makes it obvious that the pixel count is quite high. Maybe work on a smaller canvas or use a larger brush (to create a fake pixel effect).

The scene also seems to be devoid of any lighting, working on the form of the image, bin etc - but also for the bricks of the wall. Should help it stand out.

Hope that is of some help.

-Drew
Peace!

Hi
Tnx for the input both. Will read things through in details later this week (currently swamped in work :/ )
@Drew "The line work is very fine so makes it obvious that the pixel count is quite high." Is that bad? (I think its only 64x64 for the dumpster itself will have to look)

Maybe not super bad - but I think combined with the uniform blocks of colour, just that you aren't capturing the 'chunky' feel of pixel art. I suppose there is a blurring of art that doesn't include many pixels and 'pixel-art'. Edit: having checked my sketch against your original, you've used a lot fewer pixels than I'd thought at first, it might just be the really strong black-lines that are making it look off?

I'd suggest adding some lighting to the scene and use that to build up some form to reduce the uniformity. If you want to keep the outlines then you can use the lightening to soften them and make them capture the highlights:

I kept it about the same dimensions as you listed, though I've cheated and not bothered to be too restrictive with my colour pallet but I hope I make sense.
Edit: I've saved the file at a crumby quality so apologies if it doesn't come out great.
Peace!
