Dorne's Arts and Animations

#1 Post by dorne »

Hi, for those that are seeing this, I've decided to start a progression thread. My goal is to get better at drawing, animating, and programming (and perhaps writing, but that's for another thread for another time). In particular, I will be posting an informal series of tutorials regarding how to animate in Ren'Py. It would be a waste not to document my findings and my understanding, and I hope you can learn from them as much as I will.

In regards to my schedule, I run a full time business in Toronto. My main focus will be on the business, so any other spare time I will dedicate to the craft.

I use opentoonz exclusively to animate the required frames. There are tutorials for this program which you can find in the internet, and the software is free as in beer, but also free as in freedom, so go check it out.

Let's start off with a simple ball animation. This took me a couple of hours of searching the internet and led me to fellow forum poster saguaro:

viewtopic.php?f=51&t=16604

You can download the zip file, and dump the script files to the game folder, and the images to the images folder of a default template project to follow along.

Using the rainflow example, I loop a 12 frame ball animation and time it to 24, 12, then 60 frames per second in a loop.

Feedback is always appreciated!

It's Friday, which means I have some time to myself to draw something. Here's a quick drawing of my Maplestory character (it's been a while) blinking. Coloring in opentoonz is pretty simple once you are in vector mode.

I copied a Japanese artist's simple drawing and added some blinking animation. The hardest part in opentoonz for me is the colouring. It took me a while to get the fill tool working well enough, and I had to split a couple pieces of the hair as separate columns.

I can see the differences in your drawings as you go along. You seem to be doing great so far. Keep up the great work! :)

Thanks! I will when I can. Here's a quick doodle in the meantime.

I'm planning on doing some more animations for the Month of February, and putting them in VN format. I was originally going to use a game maker approach, but I'm more used to Ren'Py than GM.
