I made my own VN engine, here is a demo

#1 Post by dianavi »

Iris Engine Showcase
A while ago I started working on my own visual novel engine for no real reason other than having fun and challenging myself. I know that no one is going to use it, and I don't even recommend doing so as it still lacks important features and it's probably quite buggy, but I still wanted to show it, so I've made a small game that shows the features of the engine.

Even though it's only a showcase of features, I tried to make it entertaining, so it includes bad endings and even a hidden minigame! That being said, I'm a programmer, not an artist, so expect some bad drawings.

Download the demo

System requirements
  • Windows 7/8/10 (probably works on Vista too)
  • Visual C++ Redistributable 2015
Notes
As you can probably tell by this post, English is not my native language, so if you find typos, grammar errors or sentences that don't sound right, please tell me so that I can fix them.

I haven't been able to test the engine with an AMD graphics card, so if you have one, please tell me if everything works correctly.

If you find any bug and you want to report it, you can do so through the GitHub Issue Tracker or by posting a reply here. Make sure to include as much information as you can so that I can reproduce it.

If you want to try the engine for yourself, you can find it here. Here is a tutorial to get you started.

I hope you find this interesting!

It seems interesting. I will try it and comment when I can. Thanks for sharing. :D
I speak and write in Spanish. I use an English-Spanish translator to express myself in this forum. If I make any mistakes, please forgive me.
I try my best to give an answer according to your question.

Thanks for sharing! Making an engine sounds so complex, but given your screenshots, it does look very promising! I'll try it out. ^^

Yes, that's precisely why I started this project. Visual novels are simple enough that I was confident I could do it, but at the same time complex enough that you can learn a lot about software design from your mistakes.

You're right, I completelly forgot to add the system requirements. I will update the post.
Unfortunately, right now it only works on Windows, but it shouldn't be hard to port to other platforms (I hope), so I will try to do so when I have time.

It does not work on windows 10.
And in Windows Vista it tells me:

"C: \ User \ .... \ ... \ ... 1.EXE
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS: 11dfIP: 0598 op: 65 63 74 69 6f Choose "Close" to terminate the application "

I developed and tested it on Windows 10, so it should at least work there. I've never seen that error, can you redownload it again to check if the file was corrupted or something like that?
