It has one downside on Ren'Py: It's entirely contained within their website, which means that's the only place you could distribute it. They make money on your work alone. You share, and they get ad revenue.

Plus, it looks to me like you have no code control.

You can keep control in Ren'Py, or if Ren is not your thing, try Novelty. Give up not the rights to your work unless you can do it no other way.
I'm going to get off my soap-box now, and let you get back to your day.

I don't know exactly makes the the stuff made by Bassnovel unappealing. It's not quite the art... maybe it's the writing? As if people are just having a conversation on instant messenger.

Even the short and shitty games made in Ren'Py have a comparatively high standard -- see "Dino Briefcase Fiasco" (http://games.renpy.org/game/dinobf.shtml) has its own stroke of genius and makes it very memorable.

So I judge an engine by the works made with it... people once did that to Ren'Py.

That, and they're streaming the VN as you go... So playing one you get bandwidth chop, rather than the smooth transitions that you can get with any of the "local" engines. With the limitations on the artwork, it's not worth it.

The games doesn't even work for me. What are they, HTML and Javascript?
I'm growing more and more concerned about the web as an application platform. It's like everything's built with matchsticks and sticky tape.

You think there might be stickytape involved? I was thinking more like waxed twine, at least in this case. I'm pretty sure it's Ruby on Rails or something similar. My java platform indicator never turned itself on. It's not fast enough in the refreshes to be Flash.

I remember signing up to play with their game-creation stuff ages ago and being very disappointed in the capabilities of the engine and site. Looking back now, it doesn't look like it's advanced at all since then...

For what it's worth, the whole name of the engine is "Ren'Py"; it's a play on the term "Ren'ai" (referring to the type of game; my Japanese is non-existent but I seem to vaguely recall it refers to dating sims) and "Python", the language it's written in (and Python projects' habits of shortening the language to "Py", as in "PyGame").

"Ren" on its own doesn't refer to the engine or the type of game at all; however, there is a user on these forums with that name, so the way you use it is a little confusing. :P

Hi

I am the creator of BASSnovel.com and BASSAVG.com (bassnovel is a simplified version of bassavg)

I know it doesn't look so attracting now and the games out there are simple stories.

I do want to improve it by getting more feedbacks from users. That is why I make it a simplified version.
Because I believe the demends in bassnovel are different from those in bassavg.

I have to admit BASS is not as good as some local engines, but it is still capable of doing some serious games.

There are some advanced games I want to share with you, but they are in Chinese.
http://bassavg.com/platform/game.php?id ... 4750&t=sim
This is an example showing more interactivities and more controls.

People also concern about the copy rights.
The works ( games and images) belong to the creators, not system.
All works are able to remove by creators and are accessible directly from any other site without account needed.
The reason of creating and playing online is to share works more easily.
Thats how a good work can be known by more people and thats how a creator know what to improve.

Creators who choose BASS usually the ones who want their works to be played as much as possible.

Maybe BASS is not the place for you to create the best game in your life, but it could be a tool for you to practice and get feedbacks. Some creaotrs in Taiwan(not China) use BASS to create a promotion version for their commercial version.

Anyway, love to know there are some people noticing bass in English world now.:)
BASS is 300 times bigger in Chinese version, I just want to bring it to English users.

Scrap that awful approval system and let users upload their own graphics. I spent 30 minutes browsing only to find out I can't upload my own graphics. It's the single biggest turn-off I've seen so far.

I found a SS of that Korean web-based VN site.
Image
I was turned off by the fact that it was 100% web-based though (no way to download your game).
I gave up trying to use it once I realized that fact,
even if it had a lot of excellent tools for creating games.

(actually, all those BG and the character are something I had uploaded.
It's too bad I didn't take a SS of the stock material :p it wasn't bad at all.)

I'll say. Just looking at that one screenshot is amazing! A shame it can't be downloaded. Antoher shame that I don't speak Korean >.>
Projects:
Alone- (Horror/Sci-Fi) Complete! Link
Demokratiya- (Adventure/Action) I'm kind of winging it with this one. Goal is 100,000 words. Yeah, it's gonna take a while.
