Writer/Programmer Looking for Artist and/or Musician for Chinese Historical Visual Novel

#1 Post by Mutive »

So...I've been writing for a while and have a few credits under my belt (Daily Science Fiction, Every Day Fiction, Penumbra, etc.). I've also been working on Python and started playing around with Ren'Py as a fun way to learn more about how to use the language and have created a couple of (very basic) visual novels.

I'd like to try something more ambitious. I'm a huge fan of Chinese literature and would love to take on a (very simplified) version of Hong Lou Meng (Dream of Red Chambers/Story of the Stone). However, while I can condense the novel into a game, I'm a terrible artist, so can't do much for sprites/background. (And custom music would be great, too!)

So what I'm hoping is that there's an artist out there who'd *love* to create (or already has lying about and is happy to let me use them!) a couple of sprite collections of (primarily) women in Qing dynasty Chinese costumes. (I can provide historical costume guides.) I can probably complete the project with two female characters (with a number of expressions a piece), although if you happen to feel like drawing more, it would be awesome, as I could add in the main character (vs. have him be silent), other minor characters, etc.

A musician who wanted to add background music would also be amazing, although I feel like that might be farther along. (Seeing as it's hard to even know what music I'll be able to use until I know what characters will/won't appear!)

As per forum rules:

1) I do have a clearly defined project. I'm not working at the moment, so should have a lot of time to get it going. I have a rough draft lined out, but will change it significantly depending on the amount of art I can get.

2) I suspect this will be a free project, so I can't really afford to pay. :( (If for some reason we do decide to release it commercially, we can discuss how to split any proceeds depending on the quantity of work.) Arguably I really just need two different female characters with perhaps 6-10 expressions a piece. But the more art that is added, the more I can add additional story lines. (Which in turn ups the possibility that this will be commercialize as it makes more sense to charge for a big game than a little one. But I'd also like to start small first!)

3) Not much is complete yet, other than a rough outline.

I can provide more details as to more or less what I'm thinking, if this sparks any interest. Thanks so much!

I really like traditional folk music and I'd like to try making (more) chinese music as well. I'd like to discuss some stuff about deadlines, tasks, and things like that, but if you are interested, this is one of the few originals I have online.
