Bad Day - Short Noncommercial VN, looking for artists

#1 Post by Via_01 » Thu Jun 16, 2016 6:38 pm

Hello. I go around as Via_01, and I’m a writer currently working on a short, non-commercial visual novel called “Bad Day”. I've worked on a few visual novels in the past, a lot that were never released or died during their planning process, but I'm hoping to rectify that streak of unfinished games with this one.

Synopsis:

"Bad Day" tells the story of Alan and Carol, two college students who are as close as any two friends can be. One day, Carol tells Alan one of her secrets: how she had tried to kill herself a year before. The story explores how their relationship develops from that point on, and how everything slowly falls apart between the two of them. Its approximate length should be a little over an hour; it isn’t a large scale or ambitious project: we’re working with what we have to craft a simple-yet-rewarding experience.

"Bad Day" has been in the works for a couple of months now. The writing is already done, mostly edited and mostly coded into ren'py, with everything that entails (direction, transitions, etc.). We have a musician with us, and also an editor. I thought it'd be a good idea to do everything I can before searching for potential artists, so that they can work with everything already solidified. I'm acting both as a writer and something of a programmer… though it’s probably too presumptuous of me to say that, as I’m working mostly on my basic understanding of Ren’Py. Still, it should be enough for the small scope of this project.

Now, before you continue: we're offering unpaid work here, so please keep that in mind while you read the rest of the post.

We’re searching for two artists to join our development team. Specifically, a sprite artist and a UI artist. (In case you’re wondering, we’ll handle backgrounds using the ever-so-popular “photographs + blurring” technique. They won’t be as amazing as hand-drawn backgrounds, but they’ll get the job done.)

Sprite artist: (1/1)

EDIT: position taken.

UI artist: (0/1)

If you wish to apply for the position of UI artist, you’ll have to design the in-game menus in a simple style, but different enough from the standard Ren’Py menus so that it looks somewhat professional.

Past experience isn’t needed, but preferably you should know every skill necessary to complete the task at hand. (So no “I don’t know how to do it, but I’ll learn!” applications. Sorry.)

Remember, you'll be working for an unpaid position, so please keep that in mind before applying. Also, the intention isn’t to create a long-lasting studio, but if you wish to work with us on other projects after the experience, you’re more than welcome.

Applications preferably through PMs, with a sample of what you can do.

That's all. I'm counting on your help!
