Visual Novels on Other Systems?

#1 Post by teacup » Mon Apr 25, 2011 10:14 pm

Does anyone know of any English VNs/text based games on platforms other than PC?
For DS I've obtained Lux-Pain, Time Hollow and 9 hours, 9 persons, 9 doors - which I thought were all amazing.
All of these games are heavily text based... Sure there's a lot of games with VN elements but that's not what I'm looking for.
I also own a wii and ps2 (I kind of doubt there'll be many English VNs on those systems though).
Any suggestions? :D

iDevices have a few.. so if you have an iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad (or know someone who does)...

I've got Heian Love (otome), Road to Emerald (otome), Surviving High School, Precedent Maker Episode 1, Crazy Night Out, Foxfire, HarpsiRiddle, Pinky Distortion Episode 1 (otome), Nightmare Maze, Decide Your Own Adventure Stories...

Ripples has an iDevice version.

The Choice Of games also have iDevice versions. I've got Choice of Romance, Choice of Dragon, and Choice of Broadsides. They're ALL very good.

Those are all in english.

Unfortunately my parents believe that all iphones/touches are evil since the (American) government uses them to track people/get info (which is true, but the government tracks people with other things too so... XD) I wonder if there's some possible way of getting those games on the PC via emulator or something??

Haha, that's silly but true XD

Anyways, I don't think having an iPod touch is that bad. I've had it for years now.

& it's true that the government also tracks down people with phones, computers (email, blog, etc), and other things.

Anyway, since there are so many other things to do on the iDevice, it might not be a terrible idea to invest in one

I would like one, it's just that my parents would have to buy it, which definitely won't happen...! XD
Some of those games look awesome though... I'm so jealous!!
I wish they would translate more VNs for DS, considering there are TONS of them in Japanese... it's not like they have bad sales or anything (999 was really popular!)

I didn't word that right XD; I meant that 999 was popular in America (should've specified, lol). Because the VNs they've released in English have been well-received so far, I don't know why they don't translate more of them.

I wish they would, too. I'd love more translated titles for all my systems... there are some amazing otomes for PSP and DS that would be a lot easier to play in english. ~_~

Oh, tokimeki memorial girl's side 1 & 2 have been fan translated, if that helps. You can only use an emulator or flash cart, though, because you need to patch the game. 2 is being released on April 29th, this friday.

There's an English version of the fifth Sakura Wars game available for both Wii and PS2. It's called So Long My Love, and you can probably find it fairly cheap now. (I recommend the PS2 version, since it has both English and Japanese spoken dialogue. The Wii version only includes dubbed dialogue that's not in sync.)

Some of the old Hirameki games will work on any device that can play DVDs. They're mostly out of print now... but you can probably find Hourglass of Summer for a modest price. Unlike many of the company's games, it was not initially an adult game, so AFAIK, it wasn't censored.

The Visual Novel Database currently considers the Ar Tonelico games to be RPG/visual novel hybrids. I'd say they have much more emphasis on the RPG gameplay, but no matter. The first two games in the series are in English on PS2, while the third is PS3 exclusive.

The only English version of the Wii game Another Code R is the UK version. Keep in mind that Wii games are region coded, so make sure you can play it before importing it.

I like console games, and I like visual novels in English. It's still rare to see those two categories combine. Few companies have succeeded in selling any kind of visual novels or romance games to English speaking fans. And it's even tougher on consoles, where license fees tend to be high. That said, you should politely encourage companies to localize and publish VNs and romance games. And if you want more games of this type are published on consoles in English, then be sure to buy at least a few, especially currently available ones that interest you.

I know, I look at all of these otome games for DS and am practically drooling over them @A@ I've been very tempted to import some of them just to stare at the pretty art. XD
Have you played tokimeki memorial girl's side? It looks good but I can rarely get emulators to work properly.

-gekiganwing
Thanks, that was really helpful! :)
Sakura Wars looks good!
I was lucky enough to get 2 Hirameki games (one of them being Hourglass of Summer) before they went out of print a while back... ^o^ Though I cant say Im a fan of DVD visual novels... it was alittle clunky (lol).

VNs have such a large internet fanbase, but apparently don't sell well when they actually get translated... maybe pirating is the issue? then again, what do I know XD

a lot of people are pirates, and also what looks like a large fanbase can really be quite niche compared to mainstream gaming. the userbase is still pretty small (which is why it's important to badger people you know to buy games, ESPECIALLY if they're pirates. Every sale still counts for quite a lot in a small market.)
