Lapis Azurai [Business Management Game / Otome game]

#1 Post by Lucky-pon »

So, there is a demo for a new game, which is on Kickstarter. Looks interesting :)

Settings :

This is not a world tamed and explored, but still vibrant with magic. Settlements are scattered across the map, wherever they can find a patron to protect them or a hidden cove to shelter from the storms. Spirits demand obeisance before one can clear land for a farm. Demons ask for a drop of blood every day or they will tear down the town’s walls. A goddess protects her chosen people from the perils of the open desert in return – but no one else.

Vailia is the center of the world. Not out of arrogance does the city claim this, but as established fact – in all the thousands of miles of land and sea it has explored, no other nation dares brave the untamed wilds and storms of the open ocean. Its merchants bring together distant lands, carrying news across the known world despite the risks.

Natalie Rowena is one such adventurous soul. A childhood friend who left his family to follow her – an irrepressible thief who wants to see the world – a quiet warrior with a dark past and enough magic to shatter a country – these are her companion in her journey as she simply tries to make a living in a dangerous world.

Looks nice. I'm actually a big fan of games like Port Royale and Tradewinds. This seems to give the trading game more of a VN feel.

Interesting - I didn't actually know there was a thread about my game here, though I often lurk around looking for other VNs to explore. *^^*

I considered doing the game in Ren'Py, but decided to write my own engine for a couple of reasons. First of those is that I really like browser-based games - the ability to simply click on a web link and start playing immediately, no commitment to download and extract.

The second, and more important reason, is a matter of control - while the game does have a strong VN element to it, the gameplay is equally important.
Ren'Py certainly could be tweaked in all the ways I wanted, but in my initial tests making the game in Ren'Py, it felt more like I was fighting against the system than working with it. I also wanted upgradeability of saves. I like to release often, and I like to release small content updates that can be explored without restarting the game. Again, ren'py could be made to do that... it just would have required working in some specific ways, and struggling against the system.

As anyone following it may have noticed, the KS wasn't doing real will, and I cancelled it a few weeks in. I am, however, still working on the game, and have posted a couple of updates since the demo came out - it's a whole lot more polished now, and I'd encourage anyone who only saw it at KS time to take a look again.

Anyway, the game is completely free, and I hope people are enjoying it.
