A few ideas involving games and Wikis

#1 Post by Der Tor »

After playing around with Wikispaces a little... i mainly made 2 Wikis... one for my current game project... you can actually post the rpy script in there and since Wikispaces has support for Phyton everyone can edit the script collaboratively and it gets displayed just like it would be in the text editor that comes with Ren'Py... Well... so i think it is a good idea... except that nobody is using my Wiki so far :(

The other Wiki i made... well... i had long had an idea... well how should i put this.... i am gonna mention an evil word now that often gets the person who utters the word banned... the word is abandonware... but please hear me out cause it's not like what you think... I had the idea for a Wiki which lists abandonware... but not in the usual sense of infringing on someones copyright and also not necessarily limited to games...

More in the sense of having a place listing lots of cool old stuff whose copyright has expired or that is free or that is so cool and rare that it even makes one want to know where one can still buy it...

I just started it today so there is almost nothing on there yet... but i know some of you guys have always looked for a place like that, so maybe you wanna post something

http://abandonware.wikispaces.com

Okay I'll try to make this absolutely clear... The website WILL NOT link to any pirated material of copyrighted works.

It will only list free stuff or tell you where you can buy rare commercial stuff.

There is no software that has had its copyright expire. (To a very good approximation. Certainly no software written in the US or Europe.)

I know you where gonna say this... and of course you are right... but there is a lot of free software that deserves more attention... There are also many programs whose original versions where freeware and whose later versions became commercial and are therefore hard to find - it's also supposed to become a place for providing people with information on where to buy hard to find commercial software. Therefore it's not really supposed to become an abandonware site - i just called it that cause that's the closest thing i could think of.

Since you removed the link i am sure you haven't actually read what i wrote on the site you removed:

"My intention is to make this a Wiki that lists things that are difficult to obtain and if they are free, directly links to where they can be downloaded, and if they are still commercial, lists where they can be bought.
This is different than any wiki i know so far because it specifically sets out to list only things that are rare and hard to find and then directly lists where they can be (legally) obtained.

The things it lists can be anything that could be considered useful or precious and that is rare and so not exactly the most well known and easily obtained. So far it sounds similar to an abandonware site, but is also very different from your usual abandonware site in the following 3 points:

1. it's a wiki
2. its not limited to games but can include any rare programs, books, movies etc.
3. it doesn't infringe on anyone's copyright as it doesn't provide links to illegal downloads but only links to where to LEGALLY obtain it from."

So please tell me, is there anything wrong with that?

No, but he did delete the link. Anyway... PyTom made me think a bit... maybe calling it abandonware wiki was a bad idea as it misleads people into thinking that it hosts pirated software...

I have long thought about just calling it a freeware archive...
But that name doesn't fit either as i don't want to limit it to freeware but also want to include information on where to buy rare commercial software and i also wanna include things like movies, books and music whose copyright has expired - for short anything that's rare and though to find.

So abandonware was the closest thing i could think of... but maybe some of you guys know a better name?
