The year is 2029. Global industries are growing at their fastest ever rate, and technology seems to have no end to advancing beyond expectation. The world has finally stepped beyond the constraints of post-modernism. Despite this, life very much continues as it did 11 years ago.

While the East grows, and the West falters, change proves itself to be unrelenting and unpredictable. Due to such turmoil in the west, migration became frequent to new eastern paradises like Thailand, China and especially Japan. This meant that populations qucikly diversified, but as history repeats itself, dangerous repercussions make themselves evident.

Among these new cities, and within a new global and social paradigm, one of these cities became an extraordinary enigma of its own.

Haibu City, a colossal, towering expanse of architectural, futuristic wonder - build from demands following severe population overflow directly from Tokyo - is a two-tone parallel between the innocence of youth and the filth of maturity. Its thick, almost choking commercialism became a magnet for businesses, corporations, and upper-middle class, but at the same time, the fact that Haibu was built over an old town with rich community meant there was an inevitable troubled overlap.

The story follows Katashi Inuyama. 17 year-old male, diagnosed with both long and short-term memory loss, and depressive tendencies. Followed by a past as damaging as a tumour, yet unseen like an itch imbedded in your back. It’s as if the scars are there, but the story behind them has evaporated.

Spending most of his life seemingly stranded in a cycle of monotony and loneliness had been something Katashi had gotten used to before now. It was easier not talking, and it was easier sticking to himself. He had always received the short stick when it came to other people; especially children. Because of this, he had learnt to shut himself in. But it wasn’t just things outside of himself. Katashi struggles often with issues he can never really explain; to himself or others. After being moved from his previous city and school due to extenuating circumstances, he finds fresh refuge amidst somewhere that might just fit him in.

Cut to now. A long train journey to places unseen await him - the mysterious new school, Ijo High, the fresh nightlife, the new, albeit mangled community - there is a huge playing field to explore. Lost in a labyrinth – a city of oddities and enigma – of vice and pleasure, yet of under-tucked innocence and youth amidst the new students that have moved alongside parents. A hot-pot of different stories, circumstances and backgrounds mix together in Silent Tongues.

The story takes scope at Katashi Inuyama - both his daily life and thoughts, yet prominently also his life at Ijo High, the school he transfers to following the move. He comes to meet many people that he may or may not form relationships with, good or bad. Dynamic gameplay is the focus of this game, so most of Katashi's life is intractable and 'playable' through an expanded route-system, so the player can properly immerse themselves as Katashi. From the 'free-time' mode, to the sheer amount of choices the player has, the game proves itself to be an incredible VN experience.

While SoL and psychological themes take center stage, there are also larger elements of romance, and inclusions of horror and mature themes depending on routes. The game deals with several themes; of mental health, troubled family, physical illness, disease, politics and more - a big city always comes with big problems hidden underneath, so this plethora of themes very much implies as such.

The style of the game is very anime-inspired, with heavy surrealist themes. Reality is often depicted in different ways and styles in this game.


Overall Purpose

Work on this game began 3 years ago - development was between I myself and my co-writer and composer. This became problematic - things were slow, and our ambitions initially got the better of us. We had commissioned artists and had a small team, but due to commitment issues, many of them eventually left. 3 Years on, we have established exactly what we want this game to be - a dynamic experience, exploring a world build with care and creativity. 3 Years of world building and writing have led us here, and now, we are ready to turn this into a game with proper quality, beside an actual team.

Ideally, this game would be seen as an experience akin to Fruits of Grisaia or Cross X Channel, a game where there is an inclosed world that the player can immerse themselves into, be it a closely-knit cast, of a world ridden with circumstance. We wish to create such an experience, with characters and worlds we have crafted with care and love for what we do.

In short, I want Silent Tongues to be an incredible game that will bring out the emotions of players - a game that can truly be called a 'Masterpiece', while presenting themes that are interesting and emotionally investing. To do that, we must craft the experience from the ground up, and the only way to do that, is with a good team.

Stylistically, Silent Tongues relies heavily on juxtaposition and contrast, from the wholesomeness and purity of Ijo High, with its students happy, and the school ran smoothly - it's almost like a school-based utopia. However, there is no escaping the underbelly - Ijo is surrounded by the city it was created within; Haibu City, a new city that neighbours Tokyo. Before it, was a peaceful costal town that was pure, and had kept its traditions. However, modern industrialisation saw new businesses take advantage of this, and soon, housing and construction layered until a new place was formed - Haibu.

The once peaceful turn was now a Capitalist Tax Haven, as well as a great place for business. It quickly become highly populated, and several new and old households now occupied the same turf. Some were working families, some had deep roots within the town before Haibu, and some were dysfunctional or irresponsible. The diversity within Haibu is almost sickly in expanse. The biggest contrast, however, was between the budding youth of this town, and it's adults, who worked tirelessly, indulged in the nightlife, and were exposed to the corruption of capitalism and consumerism. As a result, despite Ijo being a place of purity and ideal-school values, sometimes, Haibu leaks in through the cracks - either through ventures into town, or through the characters that have been extensively exposed to the inner core of Haibu, and what lies within.

This makes for amazing symbolism and sublimimalism throughout - to break the cliches of VN's and Anime, in that the adult world is much more mature and less ideal - as characters age, this becomes more obvious, as the story breaks away from Ijo and into a crueler reality.

(IN NO WAY IS THIS VN HEAVILY POLITICAL - THINK OF IT MORE AS BREAKING CLICHE, IN AN ARTISTIC SENSE, BUT FOUNDED BY REALISTIC, EXAGGERATED FUNDAMENTALS OF MODERN-DAY SOCIETY)


Progress So Far

So far, we are 50% finished with draft-stage writing, and 5% finished with all writing (word count yet to be calculated - could be 200,000+). We do, however, aim to release an Act-1 demo for use of patreon (which I will elaborate on later). Concept art exists for most required visual assets in the game, such as main characters, landscape, city, etc.

The engine itself is RenPy, and concepts and working models have been conceived for the GUI and various minigame(s). The soundtrack is well underway, and our PR campaign will shortly begin after recruiting is finished. In short, we know where we're going, and we have already established the game to an extent - our next step, however, is to begin production properly, following a recent re-org.

Our next big step is to have the means to create a demo that encompasses Act 1 of the game, for use of opening a Patreon alongside, so to pay anyone who joins to the team much more appropriately, as well as expand the team further. I have experience with this already, as I have personally aided in the forming of the Patreon of SCP: SL, of which became very successful and is in reciept of 2k and month - https://www.patreon.com/HubertMoszka. In short, I have experience of running a Patreon, and I'm sure, with an Act-1 demo alongside it, we will prevail (with funds.)

Existing Platforms

Currently, we make use of a staff Discord server to upkeep regular communication between staff and to keep everyone updated. We also utilise Trello to set deadlines and tasks to the team, to ensure everyone knows what they're doing, and can communicate when they're done, if there are issues, and so on. We also utilise a Google drive folder for easier file sharing and so on. At least one PM is typically online 12 hours a day, so communication is very much open - we're very approachable.

Currently, I am also a creative developer for Studio Redacted, as well as a creative developer, concept artist and sound designer for steam game SCP: Secret Laboratory - https://store.steampowered.com/app/7003 ... aboratory/.

The other PM of this project, Sky, has vast experience with composition and writing, running his own Youtube channel for orchestration and composition, of which has been extensively successful.


Expected Commission Frequency

The funds we get towards this project are a little infrequent, being of personal funds for the most part (which will hopefully change after the Act 1 demo), making our commissioning and job distribution somewhat infrequent. It's something we learned to work with as it gives us more time to focus on the main content (storylines, planning, concept sheets, etc.). With this in mind, it's easy to determine that the lower the price, the more frequent our commissions and work tends to be.
