[CLOSED][PAID] Looking for Experienced Short Story Writer (Sci-Fi, Mystery, Plot Twists)

#1 Post by SypherZent »

Source Error Productions is working on an experimental project and the studio is looking to hire a writer who specializes in short stories, plot twists, and surprise endings. This position is paid and is for a commercial game.

Note: We received many talented applicants, therefore we are now closing the thread. Thank you to everyone who applied!

Project Info

-Each release will be episodic format, similar to shows like Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone, and The Outer Limits
-Genres include Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, Mystery
-Each episode will be 3000-5000 words
-We are using two A.I. artists for the project, meaning the artwork can be done very fast with many iterations for corrections and polish
-Writer is expected to work together with the director to design the surprise ending and/or plot twist(s) for each episode
-Right now we need approximately 12,000 words (3-4 episodes) and we have plot ideas for two of these episodes

What We're Seeking

We are seeking a writer with experience constructing short stories from scratch and integrating plot twists, surprise endings, and other narrative techniques. Each 'episode' is a standalone experience and a clean slate to create a fresh story concept within the same Cyberpunk/Futuristic Universe. We expect the writer to do a bit of research in order to come up with creative concepts for each episode (similar to the Black Mirror TV show), write the story outline, create characters/world development from scratch, and discuss the plot with the director. Once the outline has been polished and completed, the writing may begin.

Note that we already have some works of art created, including three or four character designs that could be used in any of the productions. The writer is also welcome to use the same protagonist across all stories, as long as each story is completely standalone (example: Lee Child books featuring the character Jack Reacher).

Requirements:
-Must be fully fluent in English (native speaker is a plus)
-Must have experience constructing short stories with high impact (surprise endings, or endings with high emotional impact)
-Must be comfortable with: cyberpunk, sci-fi, mystery, possibility of depictions of minor violence (no gore, no NSFW content)
-Deadline for the 12k words (3-4 episodes) is February 23rd, 2023 (12 weeks, so approx. 1 episode per month on average)
-We require 2-3 revisions (free of charge)
-Professional, concise, and precise writing style (i.e. no filler material!). A good example of this includes using "so very" before any adjective ("He felt so very happy. He was so very excited to be alive.") in order to artificially extend dialogue for higher payment. This is a big no because these productions will be so short that every sentence matters just as much as every sprite and every background.
-Must be openly creative and comfortable taking direction (i.e. possibility of having outline changed after it's done; flexibility is required)
-Need Discord account for discussions (if you don't have one, please register)
-Reasonable pricing for startup indie budgets

Operating Procedures
-We expect regular communication via Discord (answers within 36 hours unless there is an emergency)
-If you have any emergency situation that prevents you from finishing the project, we need to know ASAP
-Do not reveal or discuss project details outside of the Discord with anyone who is not part of the studio
-We will credit your work in the game credits of any builds (including promotional builds, demo, and final release)
-You can list the game(s) you develop with us in your portfolio, but we retain rights to the stories under 'work-for-hire' (WFH)
-The studio will require your signature on a simple WFH agreement
-You'll get a free key for any game(s) you develop with us
-For billing purposes, we prefer to focus on one 'episode' at a time (3000 - 5000 words)
-We're open to paying an up-front deposit, and the remainder upon project completion
-All payments will be made via Paypal

If you are interested in this project, please contact ------------ [at] -----.---.
Please include in the Subject of the email: 'Short Story Writer'
Along with a sample of your work, please send your rates for 12k words. Please send short samples (not full books), or if you only have full books, pick a short segment that best represents your skills (consider that we're emphasizing the execution of surprise endings and/or plot twists).

Note that the studio is open to offering Rev-Share on top of payment if the rate is reduced. If you're open to working this way please include how much of a reduced rate you could offer in exchange for how much Rev-Share you'd like (note: the Rev-Share option is entirely at the owner's discretion, so the final decision is theirs and they may prefer to simply pay the rate if there's not much of a price difference).

That's all for now. We are looking forward to hearing from you!
