I do hand drawn backgrounds. No 3D software or rendering used here. This gives a truly 2D feel which blends wonderfully with 2D sprites.
Fully shaded (most examples) and Painted: ~$80pp
Cartoonish (eg the school backgrounds, second group of 4 in examples): ~$50pp

If a background is deemed to be very complex prices may be a bit more and be subject to quote.
Same goes for very simple backgrounds. If the background is much more simple than any of the examples prices may be lesser as subject to quote.
I may also do a bulk discount depending on the circumstance.
