Free Writer (CLOSED)

#1 Post by brightstar2011 »

Hi there! I'm Becky.

I had a old thread open way, way long ago when I was gearing up to write my first VN but I decided to make a new one since things have definitely changed.

A little about me... I'm a recent grad with a degree in English and am currently a content writer for a background screening company. It hasn't been too long since I've written something more creative (so don't worry) but I can definitely say that I miss writing fun, dialogue-driven content and it's hard to find inspiration for your own work when all you do is work in an office. Because of that, I'm super willing to join on any VN project for free!

In terms of previous experience... I've written one VN for my capstone project and have written hundreds of poems, short stories, and movie scripts. I'm not finished with my first VN, since the artwork is killing me slowly, but the script is done.

--------UPDATE 5/18/16------

Sorry guys! I'm currently working developing a 90's kid zine called French Fry. Because of that I will no longer be working on visual novels for awhile.

Thanks for considering me though!

Short Story Sample:
Susie couldn’t take her eyes off the glowing horses. Illuminated by the neon glow of office buildings and traffic lights, their white manes seemed to ceaselessly blow in the wind. Their nostrils flared as they confidently sighed, heads bucked and eyes wild. She caught a glimpse of a pink saddled horse and gasped. It was beautiful.

The kids beside her pushed. With ant-like urgency, the other children rushed each other, policing every little move.

“Stop it!” the boy with yellow hair yelled.
“He’s cutting!” the girl with a purple headband interjected.
The short girl with the pigtails put her hands on her hips, “Nuh-uh, I was here first!”

A big man suited with a smile ignored them from his metal throne. Just a few more steps and I can ride one, she thought. Standing on her tippy-toes, Susie peeked past a boy with a baseball hat to try to see the horse she wanted. A little closer.

Suddenly a loud trumpeted bang caused her to fall back onto her heels. The big man chuckled as the children around her huddled closer to the gate. A music box chorus chimed loudly, slowly building in rhythm as the horses came to life, drowning out the cries of nighttime traffic. In her bustling line, Susie glanced away from the animated expressions of the other children and looked up and saw stars. Or, at least, she pretended to see stars.

The glowing horses danced in a circle, wildly bucking until the song sung its last chords and the horses trotted down to a stop. Excited smiles all around, the children who rode the horses were escorted away. The chatter around her buzzed as the man made his way towards the line. The girl next to Susie squealed to her friends. Susie leaned forward, ready to run.

Movie Script Sample:
FADE IN:
Children run down the street, playing.

PAN:
EXT. GRANDMA’S HOUSE - DAY
Standing at the window, MEREDITH grimaces at the children.

INT. GRANDMA’S HOUSE - DAY
MEREDITH, a 70 year old woman accustomed to living
independently, begins her daily routine. While the morning
news plays in the background, she makes herself a big
breakfast.
She sets the kitchen table with one plate and places her
large breakfast at the head of the table. There’s two
pictures above her, both of them are of young men in
military uniforms. One of the pictures is faded.

CLAIRE, Meredith’s recently married daughter-in-law, walks
in still in her pajamas.

CLAIRE
Oh, you made breakfast.
Claire sits down at the table next to Meredith and steals a
piece of toast. Meredith scoots the dishes closer to her.

MEREDITH
People who don’t wake up early
don’t get breakfast.
Although slightly irritated, Claire shrugs off the comment
and rummages through the pantry before giving up and going
back to her room yawning.

INT. GRANDMA’S HOUSE (BATHROOM) - DAY
Claire sings to herself as she takes a shower, bending over
to shave her legs. The bathroom is filled with steam.
Meredith angrily opens the door and marches into the
bathroom.
Claire jumps and drops her razor, clutching the shower
curtain to hide herself.

CLAIRE
Mom!

Meredith reaches into the shower and quickly turns off the
water.

MEREDITH
You’re wasting water.

CLAIRE
I’m shaving my legs!

MEREDITH
You’re taking too long.
Meredith walks out of the bathroom grumbling.

INT. GRANDMA’S HOUSE (LIVING ROOM) - DAY
Meredith is sitting on the couch sorting through her mail.

CLAIRE
Lunch is ready!

Meredith walks up to the kitchen table and sees that Claire
has made her a bowl full of cream of corn soup while Claire
is enjoying a turkey sandwich.

MEREDITH
What am I? 90?

CLAIRE
Not yet.
(tries smile)
Try it. It’s good.

MEREDITH
The only way you’ll get me to eat
that is if you feed me through a
tube.

CLAIRE
Well maybe if you try it, you won’t
need a tube.

Claire pushes the bowl of soup towards Meredith.
With a scowl, Meredith slowly takes a sip of the soup. Her
whole face crinkles in disgust, but she fakes a smile and
takes another bite.

CLAIRE
See? It’s good!

Claire scarfs down her sandwich and gets up.

CLAIRE
I’m going to get some groceries. Do
we need anything else?

Claire shows her what’s written on her list and Meredith
shakes her head. Claire puts her plate in the sink and grabs
her keys.

CLAIRE
(yells as she leaves)
Save some room! When I get back I’m
making a casserole!

Meredith makes a disgusted face as Claire leaves. Sitting
up, Meredith waits to hear the car start. The moment she
hears it, she gets up and dumps the soup into the trash and
begins making herself a sandwich.

I don't want to make this tooooo long, so if you want more samples please PM me! I'm mostly just excited to work in a creative environment again.

Hi Becky!

I am Chelsea. I totally know what you mean by having a hard time finding inspiration for you own stuff. I find this is my problem too. I often come up with something that I adore, and then I get so swamped with work (and things that are SO not inspirational) that I have to put my creativeness on the back burner.

What kind of genres do you like to write for?

I am (literally) just starting my own project on renpy. I am a programming student currently, so I am still learning! I mostly only have knowledge in C#, but even that is minimal. I keep telling myself with time and practice, I will get better!

I have just found an artist to begin helping me with character creation as I have the general story and the characters figured out, but I have the hardest time filling in the in-betweens of the story.
