For those of you who played Portal...

#1 Post by Sapphi » Thu May 19, 2011 10:34 pm

I finally just played it tonight. *late bloomer*
What I want to know is, did anyone else cry when
GLaDOS makes you incinerate the Companion Cube?
I know it wasn't just me! ;_;

No, I mean the first one, lol.
I finally got around to playing because I wanted to play the second one. XD

You should say: NO PORTAL 2 SPOILERS, then. Because Portal 2 players can spoil the crap out of the second game for you if you just open a general Portal thread. Heads up. :)

I did not cry at the companion cube. I thought it was funny/moving, and I remembered it long after the game was done.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to get myself one of those so I don't eternally feel horrible, lol.

I just finished the second one a few weeks ago :D Co-op is amazing, just so you know.

And, this isn't a huge spoiler, but it's some cool things you can find in Portal 2:
Look for the Rattman Dens while you play. (There's ones in the first Portal as well, but I honestly prefer the ones in the second Portal :P) They're hidden in secret areas, some you need instructions to get to. Check the walls, sometimes they have murals on them!

That's a good scientific question...

1) It accelerates. It is still affected by gravity.
2) It deforms, generating an enormous amount of heat as it does so.
3) It deforms to fit into its new shape, generating an enormous amount of heat and probably tears if the two portals are too far from one another.

2 and 3 happen if the Portals are actually held open by something like "unlimited energy", as the energy holding open the portal would flow into deforming the metal bar. If the energy is limited, the portals will probably break down, and the metal bar will end up stuck inside a wall.

No, I did not cry when I murdered my faithful Companion Cube. I laughed instead.

@Taleweaver: While I agree that the rod would probably accelerate in case A, I believe it should be treated more as a fluids problem than a simple macroscopic mechanics problem. The "flow" is induced not only by the body force (gravity), but also by the forces of the metal above and below any point in the beam. After a shell balance, you ultimately get an equation with no boundary conditions, which is unsolvable. Perhaps the question is more devious than first thought?

Also, C is easy. The portals close before the next one opens, so the bar breaks.
