OS-tans!

#1 Post by Pixie » Fri Nov 16, 2007 1:39 am

I find it difficult to come by OS-tan fans but I figured this would probably be a good place to ask :3. So, anyone here in love with OS-tans/OS-kuns? *waves hand around wildly* I love computers, I love androids, I love gijinka... it clicked. And they're just so adorable and hilarious <3. I'm so obsessive over them... I have over 25MB of OS-tan pictures alone in just one folder. The ones I have in my main folder add up as well.

For those of you who don't know what an OS-tan is, it's a personification of a computer operating system (expanded to computer applications, such as Firefox, and game consoles too, but they're not so much "official" OS-tans) that started with good old Futaba Channel (and if you don't know that, well... wiki? xD). They had precursors, but the widespread OS-tans most people know (if they know them) pretty much began on Futaba. Usually they're made into women, thus the -tan suffix (a cute version of -chan), but there are male versions of most OS-tans as well, called OS-kun. The Windows girls are usually kinda like sisters and have a rivalry with the Mac girls, but not all of them fight.

So, anyway, I love OS-tans. My favorite (as evidenced by my avatar, I'm sure xD) is 2k-tan. I love robo-girls with blue hair and glasses! And 2k-kun is sexy, too- nothing I like better than a guy with glasses in a suuuuuit >w<. In the comics I find 2k-tan hilarious; she tries so hard and is probably the most competent of the Windows sisters, but then she's got the rest of them to deal with :P. I like them all, though.

It'll be interesting to see how much Vista-tan/Vistan surfaces, as people doing OS-tan art is more widespread than it was. If I had to note a trend in Vista-tan personification I'd say a teenage girl with pigtails (I've seen her hair green a few times, and blonde a few times, but again there are a lot of different ones) and usually in goth-loli of some sort, but I've seen a lot of different ones. A forehead gem is another thing I've seen on lots of Vistans. Some of them literally have horns because of the whole Longhorn thing, but most of them seem to interpret that as pigtails or ponytail.

I really like the design of 2K-tan, but she's the only one that gets me going, really. I haven't seen many 4komas of them though.

I've seen 4komas and other types of comic with them. I've spent so much time seeking them out >>;;. I would link you to a site with 4komas and many other things, but it seems Firefox ate my favorites a while back. It's done this before, and I can restore them, but I need to ask a friend how because I forgot where to find the archive file.

As for others, I'm especially fond of 3.1-tan, 95-tan, and Homeko. 3.1-tan is just cute, 95-tan is usually drawn very prettily, and Homeko's a cosplay-loving doujinshi artist xD.

there is only one OS-Tan that i would like... and that would be Commodore64-tan  Not sure she even exists... but she would be the only one that would be truly cute... I mean... a winows-whatever-version-tan... no matter how cute she is, i would just use her as a vodoo-doll every time my computer crashes

Commodore64-tan? Boom! xD You can find at least one OS-tan picture of most things if you know where to look, and by now, I've scoured the net due to obsession (just wish I had my favorites working...). There are one or two other pictures of her if you search "C64-tan". OS-tan Collections is a very good site to look (but careful before you go browsing, as a lot of the pictures are very fanservicey and a few are sexual; the Commodore64-tan pics are safe though).

I grew up with Windows. I was using '95 when I was in kindergarten. Buggy as they may be, I've come to love them, and their OS-tans even more xD. I'm not into Macs, and I really haven't gotten into the Mac girls regardless. I like Windows girls as well as program girls- McAfee-sama especially <3.

Oh, and I looked into Vistan a bit more. There are three I see a lot- one has green hair in pigtails and is usually wearing black, one has white hair and is usually wearing blue, and one has gray hair in a spirally ponytail that often has a red and white gym uniform or something else red and white on. There probably are other common ones but I've seen at least 10 pictures of all of those types.

Huh... the link doesn't work. That's odd. Well, you can still find it if you search that site for C64-tan.

Ah OS-tans.. Yes I do love them, I think they're quite adorable..
I might have seen them in the past, but I can't quite remember what they all look like.

Except that being of Windows XP and ME..

There's a flash video for Windows ME with music on http://dagobah.biz/flash/, but you might need to look for it.

Say has there been any Linux girls?

I don't know if I can be called a fan, but I really like OS-tans. I think OS-tans really hilarious and they are good. Too bad I can't read japanese and join Futaba Channel.
Inspired by this forum and OS-tans, I've made several console-tans myself. If I can scan them I will definitely upload the pictures (have to buy scanner first...)

Hmm... I really like 98-tan twins. They are so kawaii!
I have only seen piccys, but I usually picture them as opposites. One is shy and the other one, due to her being the "buggy" version, freaks out alot.

BTW, did you know about this?

script is 85% done.
Title is now "Running through water"
and will hopefully stay that way.
Need a poem/lyric?
I'll write one for ya!

Lol their personalties mimic the frequent system crashes. To contribute something, here is the Me-tan flash file, think of it as an image song.
