I recently have started wondering about two things when it comes to anime/manga females that just don't make sense to me. Maybe someone can enlighten me
1. Why are there no (or very few) average-looking anime girls? In real life, most girls look average, right? But in anime you either have attractive girls or girls that suffer from exaggerated ugliness. Why no middle ground, like someone slightly overweight and with an "okay" face?
2. How come they never wear thongs? They're pretty popular in America and I think in Japan (T-back), too. Or boyshorts or anything but the same bikini-style? Is this a matter of Japanese male audience preference?

I don't think that's true, I've seen plenty normal girls, even in shoujo mangas(but they're usually not the protagonist) with an ok appearance.Rumiko Takahashi draws a lot of those(One pound Gospel comes to mind, the protagonist's coach is like that)
As for thongs...you wouldn't make me draw one, not even in a million years :3

Because studios generally want their anime to look good? Unless you've got a specific reason not to, why not make everything look as good as you can? (That doesn't just go for girls, but guys, streets, buildings, pets, clouds, and everything else. Although a hormone-driven hetero male audience will probably notice the attractive girls before the attractive building.)
That's kind of funny, I thought of both of those (Rumiko Takahashi & Yotsuba from Negima). I didn't really think they broke "the rules" much. It's hard for me to say any of R.T.'s girls look very good quite honestly ^_^; (just my opinion) and Satsuki Yotsuba is just one out of 31 (?) girls. Maybe you could count Ako-chan, too, but it's still a very very small minority
Then again, it is fantasy after all ^_^ Maybe since a lot of things get exaggerated, looks are just one of them.

I suppose it's all a matter of taste too. I mean, I think alot of girls in animes look pretty plain - eg Otoha from Sky Girls, Okasa from Azumanga Daioh.
Maybe it's just me...? Oh well. I like plain looking girls.
As for the thongs...
I honestly have no idea. ._.;
Maybe we should change this particular trend? ^_^

I like bikinis better, any kind! and the ones that look like short hotpants that I don't know the name in english~~....
I'd have to try darwing a girl ina thong one day.... but my girls are too sweet to wear a thong >o<;
And about average looking irls... I think people are more atracted to watch anime with cute girls and buy figures and merhandising of cute andpretty girls than average ones....
Simple. A symmetrical face is a beautiful face.
A non-symmetrical face is a natural average face in real life.
In animation, a non-symmetrical face is called "off-model".
Thongs... I've seen plenty in anime, basically anything that contains "office ladies" or "Najica" or "teacher".
