Actually, depending on what side of Memphis you live on...you're either surrounded by Christian-wannabes or African-American people that use their heritage as an excuse for all their problems... Pretty sad if you ask me. But I digress.

For those people who don't know (for example, because they are outside of the USofA), it's an network of channels that are supported primarily by begging on the air for people to send in their money, along with the occasional government grant. Because they don't have to make money, thet usually put on arts, science, and educational programming. The purpose, I think, is to free people from the thought that if they don't watch such programming, it'll go away.
In general, PBS is being largely supplanted by cable channels catering to one of the core subjects. (Heck, there's even an anime channel in some areas.)
