Old School Anime panel

#1 Post by teankun »

I am going to host an Old School Anime panel at the local con in October.
Among the titles I plan to talk about are "Macross," "Yamato," "Speed Racer," "Marine Boy," "Astro Boy," "Starzinger," "King Arthur," "Kimagure Orange Road," the original "MSG Gundam," "Macron 1," "Urusei Yatsura," "Captain Harlock and the Queen of a 1000 Years," "Voltron," and "Ranma 1/2."

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I'll give you a hint:
If you include Voltes V, you'll probably have swarms of near middle-aged filipinos coming in.
It's a joke... But really, it's a probability. :p

And how about some Lupin III stuff? Yeah...

The Rose of Versailles/Lady Oscar. Riyoko Ikeda classic... And any way you look at Oscar, she's/he's very beautiful.

Hm... Well, the first thing I would do would be to decide where the cutoff point for Old School Anime is. Is it a year, a stylistic change, or what?

I'd consider including some of the early series that current directors and studios worked on. For example, Hayao Miyazaki worked on Future Boy Conan in this time frame, as well as Sherlock Hound and The Castle of Cagliostro. How did those affect his later work.

The most important thing you can do when preparing a talk is to figure out what it is you want to say. Then you want to choose the series that best illustrate your thesis. So I think my question is: What points are you planning on making at your talk?

If I were going to talk about Osamu Tezuka, besides Astroboy, I'd at least mention Kimba the White Lion (the first color anime series), and definitely discuss Princess Knight (the first shoujo).

Maybe the limit point would be from when the studios switched from Cels to CG animation (around 2000-2002)?
But there's also the directors, like Tom said...
And also how the directors affected themselves: Osamu Tezuka, Hayao Miyazaki, Goh Nagai, Hideaki Anno... Their narration style inspired a lot of later works.

I'd personally follow this kind of anime evolution, rather than just putting a label of "old school anime". It's very difficult to define: would it be how the main characters followed some kind of aesthetic or idealism ?
I remember that Joe Higashi in Ashita no Joe is very different of modern japanese heroes, but some of his character traits still remain : in Gurren Lagann, this very image of splendeur idealism is attached with the character of Kamina.

Or how many new genres (or audience targets) were born in the 80s ?
Are you going to talk about how widespread japanese anime were before 2000 ?

It might be good to talk about anime, but if that's just a collection of pre 2002 series, it might sound like my friend talking about how "Cels anime being better than CGed anime".

I gather Gurren Lagann is a bit of a revival of old themes in a few ways... it's not your average mid-2000s anime.

I'd also suggest considering Gekigangar III. ;-)

Some vintage anime is still in print, but for others, you might have to dig through auctions or fansub sites. (Finding a decent version of Fist of the North Star / Hokuto no Ken is not easy.) Ones which exist on fansubs:

- Ace wo Narae
- Candy Candy
- Doraemon
- Glass Mask

At Otakon 2006, some people apparently put on an old schol anime panel and talked mostly about Tenchi Muyo and DBZ. Now I'll admit that the first Tenchi OAVs are now 15 years old, and the just plain Dragon Ball series dates back to '86. But some people remember shows which are much older.

See if you can find series from the "pre-OAV" days -- from over 25 years ago. Be sure to contact Mike Toole, formerly of Anime Jump. He put on a black and white anime panel during Anime Boston 2008, apparently featuring such forgotten "gems" as Big X.

...I found a forum thread listing a bunch of anime from throughout the years, along with links to OPs on youtube. The list has stuff going back to 1963, all the way to 2008. You might wanna check it out.

Thanks for all your input. Unfortunately, I couldn’t use them all in my presentation.
I mainly showed the Japanese openings of over twenty old school anime (which lasted about an hour and a half) followed by a short discussion (about ten minutes). I asked one of the attendees (who actually himself hosted the Old School presentation at NDK) how well I did, and he said I did a pretty good job, but I feel I could have done better. I forgot my notes, so I am sure I could have done better with my knowledge and commentary if I had them, but the main problem I feel is that it was too long. Since there was nothing else in the room after the panel I was not too worried of going over, but quite a few people walked out. If I were to do it again, I think I would shave it down by having less clips (like only seven or ten for no more than forty minutes) leaving more time for discussion.

Here is footage of the panel. Please veiw and comment and give suggestions for next year.

Star Musketeer Bismarck (星銃士ビスマルク ,Seijūshi Bisumaruku) HAS to go in there. And i intentionally call it by it's japanese name - cause the western version (as in outside asia) namely Saber Rider and the star Sherifs totaly sucks. I didn't like it back in the 80's when i was 6 years old and i don't like it now. But the japanese version is awesome and HAS to go into any "old school" collection :D
