Kyoto Animation arson

#1 Post by Imperf3kt »

Just thought I'd share this tragic news here, but an today a 41 year old man walked into the first studio of Kyoto Animation and set it alight, blocking the emergency exits and pouring gasoline on the staff as they fled via the stairwell, killing 33 people and injuring 36 others (including himself)

Wikipedia already has a comprehensive article.

I wish to pass my condolences along to their families and friends.
There is a GoFundMe started by Sentai Filmworks if you wish to make a contribution:

33 people dead... the number seems to have increased dramatically since I read about it earlier today. So many talented individuals gone, and their families too will have too suffer. The life of an animator is a tough one, it is so unfair that after a life of sacrifice for art, they should come to an end like this. I've also heard that Kyoto Animation are one of the few studios that actually pay their employees a relatively good wage, with other studios paying less than work at a convenience store, so they had less negative karma than other studios. A beacon of light and hope in the animation scene in Japan is being extinguished.

For anyone wondering what they made, here is a list: https://www.kyotoanimation.co.jp/en/works/
I am not the biggest consumer of anime in the world, but I definitely recognized K-On! as that was still popular when I was living in Japan (about 4 girls in a high school music club) and there were a few titles there that are on Netflix such as Violet Evergarden. I'm sure there are many more titles there that are familiar to those of you who follow anime more closely than myself.

Just a bit of a follow up for those not following this closely.
Kyoto Animation has opened its own donations page on their website and can be found here http://www.kyotoanimation.co.jp/information/?id=3075
The GoFundMe will finish at the end of July but so far has raised over $2.2M which is great. A big thanks to anyone who donated.
People have also been directly contributing via buying digital goods from their online store.
If you can, please consider watching their latest movie "Violet Evergarden" when it premieres later this year.

For some sad news though, since the attack at least one further person has died in hospital. Another needed to have both legs amputated and 8 more people remain on life support in a critical condition.
All victims have been identified but out of respect for their families, their names will not be published by police.

So far police are yet to question the suspect as he is unconscious, but the suspected reason behind the attack is because the perpetrator believes Kyoto Animation plagiarised bis novels.
