MP3 Problems

#1 Post by PyTom » Fri Jul 28, 2006 9:31 am

Problems with the MP3 support in Ren'Py have been reported to me. I'm trying to narrow them down, and may have some sort of test program to determine the extent of the problem, which I have been unable to reproduce.

Until then, please release games using OGG Vorbis music, rather than mp3s.

Just a heads up to anyone who will be releasing music shortly.

I usually recommend ogg vorbis anyway, so this hopefully won't be a big loss. I just wanted to make people aware of this before releasing a game.

(Hm... after a few months of no games, we'll have several games in rapid succession. Antipodal IntRenAiMo participants?)

There's also another bug fixed in 5.5.4, a use-after-free bug. This bug has been around since 5.1.0, and hasn't seemed to manifest, so I don't think it's worth holding up releases for,

Some friends and I that are putting a game together had been having issues with this. For some reason, it's never gone wrong for two of us, but the third person (Windows XP/3.2 GHz P4/1GB Ram/Audigy 2) had huge problems, and it would crash more often than not when switching music. When I discovered this topic, I re-encoded all our audio files to ogg and the problems are totally fixed now.

You should probably make a note somewhere more visible, though, since it seems that this problem only affects some people, so if the creator (like me) doesn't have problems, they might not realize before they release their game.

OMG!!! I am officially not insane, cursed or suffering an overdose of gummy bears!

This is bad, yes, but I'm also glad that other people have been able to find the problem. And maybe it's good, because now we're probably having a bigger chance of pinpointing the thing.

I'm now strongly considering simply disabling support for mp3s, especially if I cannot gain access to a system that has this problem. I have no idea what's going wrong here.

Okay, this particular problem has been resolved in 5.6.0, and the new problem is now well understood. So I'm unstickying this thread.

I want to extend my thanks to everyone who helped to troubleshoot this problem.
