One thing is that I'm compiling smpeg (the mpeg decoder library) on an AMD platform (Sempron 3100+, IIRC). I'd be interested in finding out if the problem manifests on other P4s.

(And on other systems as well, please please test and let me know either way, along with a capsule snapshot of your computer.)

Couldn't reproduce this either ô_o... I went up to the "don't click" msg, then rolled back with the mouse wheel up to the beginning, then used CTRL to go through... and so on, more than 50 times. Nothing strange happened.

I'm running WinXP SP2 with a Soundblaster 512.

I remember now that I've had a few problems with my own game freezing when I tested it at work. I never put much thoughts into it since it only happened, what... twice ? and well, it's at work, so... eh ^^;;... *realizes he shouldn't keep such things to himself for so long*. Might not be related, but if it is, the main similarity I see is that, of course, the work computer has an on board sound card.

EDIT : I'm using an AMD, if that's any help (not sure for the work compy)

Kathryn's laptop does have an "onboard" sound card, since it's a laptop, it's not the AC97, but it comes from Realtek (which makes the AC97... which is a chip or something).

Anyway, so: the audio in all three computers is built-in and comes from Realtek.

I'd like to thank everyone who's participated in this test... and to remind everyone who hasn't to do so. I really need more input on this problem.

Over the weekend I should have access to a wide range of different computers (well, maybe 3 or 4), so I'll test some more.

Eh... had posted this to the wrong corner... here goes again:

Works fine on Intel Pentium M laptop running WinXP SP2.
Will try Intel PII/450 running Win98SE when I've finished installing it.

Edit: Also ran fine on my PII/450.

Preliminary report, I tried it on 4 more computers, 2 of which crashed the game. I have the hardware specs and dxdiag logs of all of them, but all 4 had an onboard sound card. Of the 2 that worked, one had no sound drivers (predictable) and the other one was an older Pentium model (though it had the AC97 codecs I suspected to be the cause).

So it may be a combination of Pentium 4 and an onboard sound card. I'll have hopefully two more computers to test it on today. I'll send the specs to PyTom on Monday or so.

Along with the specs, please send any sort of crashdump you get... I saw a site that discussed how to get something usable out of even the MS crashdumps.

Umm, it's too late for the crashdumps, those WinXPs have them turned off (if by crashdumps you mean error reports), and I don't know how to switch them on again. I know there is a way, but I had no time. I'll find it and turn them on next time. :(

EDIT: Predictably, it works perfectly on the fifth computer, which is a P4, but it has Audigy.

I'll look for it to. Also, could you try varying the audio buffersize? You go to the command line, change into the directory containing console.exe, run the command

set RENPY_SOUND_BUFSIZE=512

and then run console.exe.

Also try buffer size 65536... it may be something specific to a particular buffer size. (I'm grasping at straws, of course.)

I'll work with this setting as well. It's becoming increasingly frustrating for me, someone else should be able to make the crash as well, I feel like a cursed man...
