but it is my belief that the poor art that seems to appear in these fan-made visual novels dissuades people from being interested in them
It is true that nicer art does have an appeal, but I don't believe this statement is true considering that Moonlight Walks, created by the very same dude who made the ren'py demo, was downloaded over 20000 times (http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewto ... &start=165). I think since last year, there has been a increase of interest in fan-based games, contrary to your beliefs.
but it seems that people put less effort in their artwork than in their writing
I don't see how you came to this conclusion. Everyone here put in alot of efforts and time to their creations. Like you said, artwork will improve with practice over time, and over time you will see, as new releases are made, that each person's art will improve. But for most of the releases that are out there right now, there is no doubt that the best effort was made in both the artwork and the writing.

I did say they put less effort, not no effort. When there's endless pages of dialogue and 3 pictures in the game, that seems like less effort to me. I think it might be better stated as misdirected effort. If you're not used to drawing, you are more likely to keep trying to "fix" a bad image as opposed to scrapping it and starting a new one. Everyone is perfectly free to draw however they like, but we are also equally free to discuss said work, with the hopes that people can accept criticism beyond "LOL SUXORZ" and "WOW GREAT JOB!!!"

To set this record straight: My "game" that I put out is not in any way supposed to be a game. It is a teaser and feedback seeker targeted at the crazy people of 4chan. If it were an actual novel, trust me, it would say so 20 times a sentence. It uses the borrowed art as placeholders and so people have something to go on besides my fan art if they want to look them up. The vast majority of statements made within it are humorous in intention and were injokes directed towards myself and 4channers. Any actual visual novels that I put out, whether they are doujin parody or original, will feature my original artwork. If anyone else feels a need to criticize these trailers in the future, please use specific examples, instead of dismissive descriptions such as "stupid" or "mindless porn." Please do not dismiss my work that you haven't read, as it hasn't been published. I'm not Uwe Boll, ok?

The thing is... if it's directed at the 4chan crew and is full of in-jokes, it will be hard to appreciate it, not being part of the crew. As it is, you're just using a lot of bad words, apparently considering the use of the F and B word as something funny. Well, it probably *is* funny for some, but people who enjoy reading 20 pages of text and don't mind the only 3 "poor art" drawings might find it hard to swallow ;).
So yea, actually, it would be wrong to say this is "bad", as it's a very subjective opinion, but it's definitely not aimed at us and it shows. We usually like deep yet cute characters with moving stories. Your target likes sl*ts and b*tches who are as shallow as possible and just want sex. Quite different.

Oh, and btw, telling your "trailer" is mindless porn and stupid is funny. Yes yes, just as much as bashing Eileen and calling her a b*tch. It's humor, get it?

Actually, this is probably the funniest part. Like I have something against a fictional character. I hate to break down the mysteries of fiction, but just because a writer writes a character saying something doesn't mean they actually believe it.
the use of the F and B word as something funny
Me and like every comedian ever. Even Howie Mandel cusses a blue streak in his live shows. I wonder how much longer these profanities will last. They've been used so much that they really have little power left. Maybe the future really will be full of feldergarb and smeg off.

mindless porn

Since you had to bring this up again, I'll share a little spoiler for my first actual eroge: the secretest ending of them all is a nifty even-handed essay/discussion about how sexual obsession is holding back the evolution of humanity. It's shaping up quite nicely and is one of my favorite parts of the work.

Hmmm, I will just point out that almost everyone's main problem isn't how to make their graphics better, but it's actually finishing the game. It's surprisingly difficult to do that, even when it seems like nothing.

And so, compromises are made, and they are almost always in the graphics or music. It's a fact. It's not that people wouldn't want their graphics to look good, but often there is just no time. You work on a game that lasts 1 hour for 6 months, and that's just about the time it starts to get on your nerves.

I was going to say this before, but I never got to it - those words work very fine in films like say "the 40year old virgin" or what have you, but once you actually see it written and have to read it, it becomes a lot different. The way you talk in normal life, try putting it down exactly like that and it will look really bad.

Mh *shrugs*... Let's say I'll wait for the full games then.

Edit :

True, the way of saying it counts... and it's sadly something that can't be transcripted in text only.

Even if that person tried their hardest and spent 5 times the time to draw those 3 pictures over their written text?

Note that this would also depend on how you write the script too. It would be possible for you to rewrite the entire script leaving all profanities intact and still make it humourous for both the 4chan'er as well as the people on this board.

Since you did say that this game was made specifically for people on 4chan then I can't really provide you with any useful feedback about the game. But you did post your game in this forum and asked for comments, so don't be surprized that many people don't like it since it was never designed for them. For future reference, try to write your script in a way that will appeal to a wider audience. For me, I will wait for your full games as well.
