How to determine a bug and display two things at a time...?

#1 Post by SayuriSakurai » Fri Aug 02, 2013 6:08 am

I released the demo version of my game. Someone played the game, then sent me a message saying:
I've played up to after Sayuri blows up on her English teacher and is getting ready for the pajama party. (I of all people probably shouldn't be playing this XD)

The UI is rather simple, left click to advance and choose "paths". This is a feature I like very much, the ability to choose different scenarios. Although, I would have liked to be able to go back in the story for I accidentally click past a text box and asked me if I wanted to say "yeah" or "not really" and I didn't even know what I was replying too, like Katawa Shoujo, you should leave the last text screen visible when choosing scenarios, so you know what you are choosing for.

As stays persistent through what I have played, there are blank text boxes between ALL dialogue, please remove these if possible, it destroys the flow of the game, and I thought my game crashed after the buss scenario because it got dead quiet and was just a black screen. Make sure to have something there, even if it's just a "left click to continue" (playing as I am typing this happens a lot).

For now that's all I have to say.
Well, I would like to know how to display both the previous dialogue and all menu choice at the same time. I would also really, really like to find this bug she's describing. I downloaded the game myself again and played it, but there wasn't a single problem. Please help me find the bug.
(Me so dumb, me so dumb, me so duuummmmmbbb!!!!!!!!!!!) DX

I played through your demo and that person is right: there are double dialogue boxes in your game, the first with the dialogue, then a second one that is blank, only with the name of the character, so we have to click twice to progress. I have no idea why this is happening. Have you been messing with translations?

The problem related with the choice menus is that you might be coding them this way (based on the "bus" scene):

Code: Select all

menu:
        "Yeah.":
            call any_label_you_are_using
        "Not really.":
            call any_label_you_are_using
To show the dialogue and the choices at the same time you only have to do (notice that you can show the menu with a transition):

Code: Select all

menu:
        with dissolve
eileen "I just love this bus. Don't you?"
        "Yeah.":
            call any_label_you_are_using
        "Not really.":
            call any_label_you_are_using

No, sorry! You must be mistaking me for someone else.

I know what my beta tester and you mean now. I went on a windows computer, downloaded the game, and played it. The reason why there are double dialogue boxes is because you haven't set the text speed for the game yet. To fix this problem, go to the preferences page and set the text speed to the speed you like.
Thanks for showing me how to show the dialogue and menu choices at the same time!! :D

You can also set the value of config.default_text_cps to ensure that the text speed already have a default value even if the player did not adjust it.
