Launcher problem?

#1 Post by ktalkimist » Mon Nov 11, 2013 11:52 am

Hey guys, we've always had this odd problem where my Ren'py launcher is different from my friend's, but now it's more than a minor annoyance because it's causing UI to go bonkers (i.e. UI is aligned properly on one machine but not on another).

Here's how the launchers look like.

Proper launcher:

Broken launcher:

We've tried both 6.15 and 6.16 on the machine with the "broken" launcher but that doesn't fix problem. Any help will be much appreciated!

You say that you have 6.15 and 6.16 in the same machine. I don't know why, but the preferences information (projects directory and text editor) get mixed up. Simply, in the version you are using/testing, go to preferences and select your projects directory and text editor again.

OTOH, I don't know why your bars and lines disappear, that doesn't happen to me.

No, there's nothing wrong with the directories. The screenshots above are just to show what the launcher looks like. The one with the missing bars and lines also gets misaligned UI. It's been like this even before downloading 6.16 to the same machine, which we did to see if that will fix the problem.

Is it safe to assume this is an isolated case? Because we don't want our UI to be messed up for some people...

To further illustrate, the broken UI is like this:

The save file boxes do not snap onto the the strip in the proper build.

As far as I know, sometimes Frame displayables can't be shown properly with an outdated Intel GPU driver.

Well, I've updated the driver (for GT540M) but that doesn't fix it. :(

Does Ren'py use any registry or .dll files I can delete so I can "reinstall" Ren'py?

The only registry key it uses is the one that gives the location of the system's java install.

It uses a lot of dlls, but they should all be included with Ren'Py. That being said, we've had cases where windows programs have injected code into the Ren'Py process, causing problems.

Hey PyTom, do you have any suggestions then for fixing this problem? It seems the problem really is with the frames, because frames display incorrectly in-game.

Maybe hold down shift on startup, and switch to a different renderer?

Tried disabling anti-virus in case it's interfering, no luck...

This might be a related problem. Now the machine in question returns this error:

I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

While parsing D:\User\renpy-6.16.1-sdk\xxx/game/bgm.rpy.
UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode byte 0xf9 in position 8: invalid start byte

Also, Editra refuses to open the script files, saying the correct encoding could not be determined. It asks me to choose an encoding but nothing works. In Scite, the code show up as gibberish like below.

Image

Everything works fine on the main machine used to code our game.

Tried it on a desktop that used to run it perfectly but it gets the same error.
