Request for those who can read Chinese / Japanese characters

#1 Post by DaFool » Mon Aug 13, 2007 12:59 pm

It would be nice to keep tabs on the worldwide VN scene... not just OELVNs, but even OJLVNs made with Ren'Py, just as an example.

Like, I couldn't believe that there is no Chinese Ren'Py VN made yet (at least ones which are publicly available on the internet.) Same with Japanese VNs made with Ren'Py (if ever there will be one, considering their good engines available).

If we could have a few people scour the .cn message boards etc and alert us, that would help a lot.

If applicable, perhaps request to mirror the game on ren'ai archives (if there will be no restriction on English language only in the future).

Or at the very least discover new archives of visual novels around the world, aside from the links to raw Japanese VN doujinshi that can be found on the VisualNews forums.

The goal is to keep tabs on the Ren'Py world visual novel doujinshi scene as it grows (essentially would be history in the making, LOL). It would be far easier than discovering something years down the road and finding out it, or discovering bits and pieces of games here and there and not knowing how big the scene actually is. Thanks.

Found one.
Seems like someone decided to create a clone/sequel to Symphonic Rain from Kogado.

"Torta and Chris rainbow adventure".

They seem to be ready for a beta version for this year's fall. I can't read chinese so I can't give you more details.

It's kind of weird to see katakana in a sea of Chinese (is this a Taiwan thing, maybe?)

I can read some Japanese, but not Chinese; Google refused to translate it; and BabelFish made something of a mess. I tried cleaning it up some-- mainly transcribing the kana and changing "default characters" to asterisks-- with meager success:
BabelFish wrote:*the sentiment *lies between

Maybe someone who is familiar with the series can make sense of that.

I am, but this is a total spinoff so my knowledge of the original game is not relevant.
It's not hard to see it's from taiwan since the website is from there as well.
But it's fun to see that renpy can be used like that. I wonder how they'll code the piano sim, if they intend to do it.

Well, yes... but I was referring to the practice of using kana (Japanese) with hanzi (Chinese).

Kinda out of topic but...O_o I was staring at the original games' screen shots and I noticed the days and apparently some locations' names are in Italian.
Lately there seem to be quite some Italian titles/terms in Japanese VNs (like Tre donne crudeli, La corda d'oro which is also a game with some music elements as far as I know...)
Uh, sorry, sorry sorry ;_;I couldn't help myself!

Because using foreign languages for stylistic purposes is cool, like German.

(Of course, if you actually know the language and realize it's Ital-rish, then it's not so cool anymore).

XD Well, in this case i was surprised to see how well they used it, for example for the"Scuola comunale di musica Villa Piova"(if i remember well).I wouldn't be surprised to learn that a native speaker helped them.
Actually, for me it's always cool!^_^Even though once or twice the tarot cards' names were spelled wrong in Escaflowne I was really thrilled to see some Italian words in it, as I always thought no one liked Italian as a languageT^T

Also, and I'm not-so-subtly referring to a discussion that took place on this forum about a game that I played and really enjoyed even though I didn't leave a review because I'm too lazy and shy of my opinions sometimes, I've seen anime that took place in Italy in the past with some huge cliché.The first that comes to my mind is The prince of the Sun, by the same author of Captain Tsubasa, I don't even know where to start to describe how wrong it was and on how many levels, and I really don't want to derail this thread more than I did.I do remember that I was still really happy, because the author tried his best in my opinion, even if he depicted a really anachronistic and clichéd Italy, I still wanted to believe he did so while he was expressing his love for a country where soccer has a really big importance^_-
