Hoping to add video links throughout the game

Hello there . I am hoping to develop a game with a feature similar to that of Go Go Nippon. As you read through the story, once in a while, there will be a button that appears, and when you click on it, it will open your browser and take you to a YouTube video.

So, for instance, perhaps something like:

'"All right, let's go," she said.'

'And with that, the plane took off.'

When that second line shows up, I want a button to appear, and when you click the button, it will go to a YouTube video of some plane take off footage.

Is such a feature possible? I would love to have some help on this. Thank you so much !

You could do this by defining a screen, then showing and hiding it as you want the link to appear.
eg.

Or you could just take the footage and play it inside the game with the movie function?

I recommend taking about SundownKid's suggestion. Not everyone has consistent internet access, they may want to download the game and then play offline. And since you are using videos that belong to you (you are, right?) then you can just include the videos in the game.

Yeah, I do think having the videos embedded into the game would be better, and they will indeed be footage recorded by me. In games like Go Go Nippon and Shan Gui, I noticed they choose to link to photos from Wikipedia etc. It makes me wonder if things are more lenient if you link out to a video instead of including the film data in your game. The area is a bit hard to define. In another example, during the Sleeping Dogs live action trailer, the camera shows some bank logos for a few seconds as it pans across the city. Is that breaching copyright of some sort? Happy to hear some advice regarding this.

I wouldn't be concerned about it. The only thing you should be concerned about is if you are making a clear attempt to disparage a certain brand, like for example, making an evil corporation with the exact name of a certain company in real life. In that case companies have the right to issue a cease and desist, otherwise, they don't have the right at all even if you make the main character eat a McDonalds hamburger.

As for the copyright status of photos and videos, maybe they didn't include them because they weren't licensed for commercial use? Though it seems as though it should be easy to find another one that -is-.

Thanks for the response Sundownkid . Cool, I will definitely give it some thought, then. This is a game I am planning to charge money for, so I thought commercial projects might be more sensitive. But yeah, I'm not making Call of Duty or anything , and I did get permission from a few places I plan to shoot at. Thanks .
