.webm video lags horribly while recording

#1 Post by Jae » Thu Dec 10, 2015 3:21 am

I recently discovered that while .webm videos play flawlessly for Ren'Py games, they lag horribly when someone is recording gameplay.

Here are two videos I've recently discovered on YouTube that featured my game's demo:

Video 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hraIYHs7CTY
Video 2: https://youtu.be/7fmJ9w1logA?t=37m36s

I tested this myself while recording with OBS; the video becomes virtually unwatchable. As soon as recording stops, the video resumes proper playback.

Webm videos are encoded as V8 with Vorbis audio.

I don't understand codecs or containers all that well, so I cannot begin to explain how or why this happens. If someone knowledgeable on this can explain, I would love to be enlightened.

At the same time, I would love to find an alternative. It's unfortunate, as I thought .webm was the salvation for using videos in Ren'Py.

Update: I realized this is simply due to bitrate and encoding on the screen capturing software's side. I tested a second time with Fraps and the recordings were perfect.

Now to figure out what's the deal with OBS...
