Unsure on how to add/use the updater functions

I've stared at this page ( http://www.renpy.org/doc/html/updater.html for hours, trying to make sense on how and where to add the updater functions to a game. I get enabling the updater in the options, but what after that?

Also, for webspace, do you need to have a dedicated server or could you use something like dropbox?

You need a dedicated server, and a reasonably decent one.

Other than that, you basically just upload the generated files to your server, point the updater at the url to the update.json file, and it should pick it up and work.

I guess I don't exactly understand how to use the updater functions in game. I've been trying to get something but I usually end up with this or a similar error:

What does your code look like? updater.Update is a screen action.
