best way to capture a video from a renpy game.

#1 Post by Kia »

I have this trouble with capturing a good quality video from my games, none of the software I checked can capture renpy games in full screen for some reason and all of them are too heavy on the computer resources that make everything laggy and the video comes out like it's 12 frames per second. what do you do?

Well, what are the programs you have used? I am in love with OBS, but then again I have a Mecha for a PC. If you are just recordin your game then you should be fine.

I've not known VNs to destroy a PC's framerate.

recently I've tried:
Free Screencast
AutoScreenRecorder 3.1 Free
Active Presenter
Icecream Screen Recorder
and five or more other free ones before, I even tried some paid software but so far none of them given me a good quality. my laptop isn't that good but I think core i5 and 6GB ram is enough for such a simple task.

Yeah, it should be. Try OBS. I believe it will work out for you. Your processor seems like it can handle it. It will take just a bit of time to learn, but not much. Tutorials are everywhere. Plus it is pretty sleek and easy to understand.

Here's a test recording with OBS for "I Suddenly Became A Magical Girl". You can customize the aspect ratio, but it seems to work fine for me:

with my slow internet it takes a while to download, I did skip OBS before because of it's size. lets hope it's better than the others ^_^

If you have an Nvidia graphics card, the drivers come with Shadowplay (located in Geforce Experience), which will let you capture footage without much overhead.

shadowplay was disabled on laptop graphic cards, I've tried a trick to re-enable it but it didn't work. I'll update my driver and try again in few days.

Oh. That's a shame. I hadn't heard they'd done that. Shadowplay is one of the best pieces of capture software I've used.

@Kia : what graphic card do you actually use in your laptop? If you use the onboard IGP from your I5 processor, you could just activate quicksync encoder to reduce CPU usage (if you haven't done it already).

Btw, can you check the cpu usage before and while recording? I'm curious about who actually eats your CPU resources..

I've checked, my CPU usage won't go higher than 54 while recording and the ram usage isn't going higher than 70% still everything is laggy.
I can't find anything related to activate on my computer, I guess I didn't install it or something.

@NialGrenville thank you for your help, I've finally downloaded OBS it's a great tool, very versatile and very easy to use and no lag with most of setups. there is only one small problem. no matter what settings I use, I can capture any renpy game while full screen.
@LateWhiteRabbit I'll post here if I could get the shadowplay to work.
@dorne, @indoneko thanks for your interest

*Seems to have a problem with full screen games

Have you tried using desktop capture? There are some work around tricks.

*Hate to admit this*

Back in the day when I played Minecraft. I could not stream/record it directly. So I made it desktop capture and did some editing. Just have to think intuitively!

I've checked all of settings I could, none of them could capture a full screen. even desktop capture ignores the game and just captures everything under and the mouse. since no other software could do that as well, I assume there is a difference in renpy ways of rendering it's window that causes that, or maybe lots of games are that way, I have to install some games and try them to make sure ^_^

Here's my setup, let me know if it's something you've tried:

Open the ren'py game in windowed mode.

Under Settings>Settings>Hotkeys I put start recording and stop recording hotkeys.
Under Settings>Settings>Broadcast Settings I put Mode to "File Output Only"

Game Capture Source, under properties i put stretch image to screen.
Select Application to the Ren'py window.

Open the ren'py game in fullscreen or Alt+Enter to fullscreen the window.

Press the start recording button, then when done press the stop recording button.
