Reverting back to Scite

#1 Post by mugenjohncel » Mon Sep 29, 2008 3:38 pm

OK, so I tried the new Ren'py and clicked this nice little button on the top right corner of the screen to peek at the script and... this thing popped up. Played with it a bit but... it's too much strain for my poor eyes... I want Scite back...

I'll go straight to the point...

How do I re-enable Scite in renpy-6.7.1?

I downloaded a separate copy and would like to re-integrate it back in the renpy launcher so whenever I clicked on the "Edit Script" button, good old Scite will pop up instead of this... eyestraining Jedit thingy...

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure you'll find your solution in Ren'py/data/editor.rpy file :D

Or setting up config.editor variable.

If you want to set the appearance of jEdit:

You see that toolbar with all the pretty pictures? Near the very right is a picture of a wrench and a screwdriver. Hover over it a bit, and it'll say "General Options." Click it. There'll be a pop-up, and it'll have a sidebar. What you want to check out is "Text Area". And from there you can change your Text font.

Don't forget to Apply and OK it! :)

You can also customise the overall look of jEdit by choosing "Appearance," but you'll have to restart it for the changes to take affect. And since I'm so girly, all of the text is in Segoe Print.

So I guess the only way for me to continue using my beloved Scite is to browse and click Scite manually... :(

Oh well... (currently sulking in a dark corner of the house)

After almost one hour trying, I've been unable to get the configuration right. It'd be nice if PyTom could share a bit of knowledge about which values should be used for Scite, and maybe for some other mainstream editors.

There is a bit of hope yet ;) If you are on Windows, you might associate the .rpy, .rpym, and .py extensions with the editor of your choice, and then double-click the files rather than manually launching the editor. Personally, I find myself using this mechanism quite often; since I have my many scripts grouped in folders and Ren'py doesn't "see" anything else than the game's directory's top level when launching the editor (which is not much of an issue: opening all my script files at once doesn't look like a very good idea :P )
I have failed to meet my deadlines so many times I'm not announcing my projects anymore. Whatever I'm working on, it'll be released when it is ready :P

http://www.renpy.org/w/images/b/b7/Scite.zip

is a version of scite that works with 6.7.1. To use, unzip this in the renpy-6.7.1 directory. It will ask if you want to overwrite the data/editor.rpy file... let it. Scite should then work.

MJC, this is an updated version of what I gave you yesterday, that should work with the new config.editor and config.editor_transient semantics.

SciTE for 6.7.1 doesn't work for me.

#8 Post by Formedras » Sun Oct 05, 2008 1:13 am

I downloaded PyTom's SciTE for Ren'Py 6.7.1 from this thread, and did a manual install. (I use 7-Zip, so I couldn't do this directly - I had to first unzip the editor directory, then directly copy the data/editor.rpy because of how 7Z unzips to a temp directory THEN copies). This should have worked perfectly fine, because every file went where it was supposed to go.

It didn't. On both of the systems I use (One is a 1GHz P3 Celeron laptop on Windows XP Pro SP2, the other is a Celeron D 355 desktop on Vista Home Basic (It's not my fault! Please don't tar and feather me! It's my mom's computer! Ahh! AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!)), I do this, go into the Ren'Py Launcher, and click Edit Script. It says it launched the editor with however many files, and then... nothing. Not even an error message.

Did I do something wrong, or is something wrong with the package?

Got similar issue on both my laptop (WinXP Home SP3) and my girlfriend's desktop (XP Home SP2): exactly the same, the launcher says "editor launched with n files" but nothing is launched. It works fine with jEdit however. Since I finally decided to migrate to jEdit with the 6.7.1d release, I didn't care too much about this, thinking I had done something wrong, as usual :P.

BTW: My mother is also running Vista and, despite her technical knowledge about computing is nil (she barely handles e-mail, messenger, and some Office), she's already annoyed by that and trying to get an XP to replace it :D

I wasnt to happy with the incorporation of JEdit either. Scite was better.

And I too am receiving the same error for the method described above.
