A question about sound files

#1 Post by Marcelo_Orlando »

I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't seem to find that thread so........
I have a question concerning sound, music, what types of sound, music files does this system support? I know Ogg is the preferred, is it possible to convert MP3-BGM, etc., into Ogg? How does that work?

Thanks Marcelo

Ren'Py Reference Manual on Audio wrote:Ren'Py supports playing music and sound effects in the background, using any of the following audio file formats:
  • WAV (uncompressed PCM only)
  • MP3
  • OGG Vorbis
  • OGG Speex, particularly useful for speech
  • Various MOD formats, as supported by Modplug Tracker
You can use MP3 tracks.

I suggest reading through the Reference Manual. It's more in-depth than the other tutorials.

The reason why ogg is preferred is that it's a free format, whereas mp3 is not. Also, ogg is more efficient (smaller file size for equal quality).

Also, re-encoding from one compressed format (such as mp3 to ogg) to another is generally a bad idea due to the loss in quality. Encode from the original wav file if you can.
