How to customize the background on side of the start menu?

The screen at the beginning seems to have a background gradient which is light white but semi-transparent. I can't seem to figure out how to change that to a darker background to ensure that my white text 'pops' appropriately. This is the area where you first launch the game and on the left, it has a vertical menu:
Start
Load
Preferences
About
Help
Quit

Trouble is, these labels are white and the background makes them super hard to read. Similar in the preferences, load screen, help, etc. What I'd like to do is make the background which seems like a gradient as it's semi-translucent, my guess is it's an image but not sure which. Attached a screenshot in case I'm using the wrong wording to ensure it's clear what I'm asking about

Okay, ugh, this is in the documentation. What I needed to do was edit the image inside this directory:
$game title > $game > gui > overlay

The file name is main_menu.png

I think as the doc here had a different directory, I was needlessly confused.

These two files in the doc are the actual backgrounds.
