When I try to use a custom textbox...
window_background="textbox_phone.png" results in an error, but "window_background="gui/textbox_phone.png"" makes the text box disappear. I'm pretty sure the image is in the right place, it's in the GUI folder...

You don't need to fiddle with the code, merely replace the image "textbox.png" found in the gui folder, with your image. Keep the name the same.

But I want certain characters to have 'textbox' and certain characters to have 'textbox_phone'.

"window_background="gui/textbox_phone.png" is the correct one. The problem of text box disappearing is maybe due to the adjustment of the textbox position?

The textbox for the phone is the same as the normal textbox, just recolored, and the normal one works fine.

You could do a window hide at the start of the game and just 'show' an ordinary image that covers where the text box area instead.
Not ideal, but it'd work.

What is the file of the textbox? PNG or JPEG? (just want to be sure). Is there another styling besides "window_background" for that specific character? You could attach the textbox file here so I can check it out.

Just remembered a common issue.
In Windows are you hiding known file extensions (default)
You may have inadvertently named the file "textbox_phone.png.png"

OK. Scrap the theory of incorrect file name, as Ren'Py should throw "IOError: Couldn't find file". Tell me, what happens when you use "window_background="gui/window_icon.png"? Does something show on screen or nothing show up at all?
