Re: Notepad++
Hmm...Notepad++ only runs in MS Windows environment. Currently those that are stuck using JEdit are Mac users so they can't use this as well. MS Windows users can revert back to Scite if they don't like JEdit...
I suspect somebody is stealing my internet identity so don't believe everything I tell you via messages. I don't post or send messages anymore so don't believe anything I tell you via messages or posts.

Re: Notepad++
I don't like so I'm back to using Scyte. I would like to use Aptana to edit the files (it has an extension to add Python support with code insight and so), but it sadly doesn't supports ren'py .-.
I think I used notepad++ once, but not for Ren'Py though.

Re: Notepad++
yes I did, but now that I have JEdit configured like I want I prefer it to n++ for RenPy.bac9i4mo wrote:haha, weird beginning

Maybe if PyTom wouldn't use a stripped version of JEdit more people would like it. Java isn't an argument against, I run pretty much Java stuff on my normal notebook.

Re: Notepad++
I just wish JEdit wouldn't take 10 seconds start up and automatically start up when lint goes. Instead, I wish it would make a new tab like in Scite.
Personally, I'm just using both on my home PC ... As for Notepad++, I installed it, looked it over, uninstalled it and went back to NotePad for pure text.

I switched back to SciTE for exactly this reason.BCS wrote:I wish it would make a new tab like in Scite.

Okay, much as the topic of Scite >> Jedit is a tired old topic, I just want factual observations... what specs are your machine and how long does Jedit start up for you?I just wish JEdit wouldn't take 10 seconds start up and automatically start up when lint goes.
For me, on a Core 2 duo Mac, it's near instantaneous on OSX, and only 3 seconds under Windows XP.
I was just wondering whether my old Pentium 4 would have had a problem with it (though I wasn't doing any game programming around the time the Ren'Py editor was upgraded, so I never tested on it.).

I may have been exaggerating slightly. Do you know of a good stopwatch program?

From Start -> Run dialog:
N++ (my preferred editor for most stuff): 2~3 on first and subsequent launches.
Scite (the one I had on my Ren'py 6.7.1, still there 'cause I'm to lazy to move project folders): <1 sec on first and subsequent launches.
JEdit (as included with Ren'py 6.9.0; haven't messed with it yet): 7 secs on first launch*; 4 secs on subsequent launches. These times are both for the exe and the jar files.
From the Ren'py Launcher:
N++: N/A (haven't gone through the hassle of setting it up with Ren'py)
Scite (from 6.7.1, where I have it set as the editor): <1 sec
JEdit (from 6.9.0): 4~5 secs.
Tests from the launcher were all made with the "Demo" project.
My machine is a AMD Turion64 2.0GHz with 1.37Gb RAM (1Gb module + 512Mb module -128M taken by the graphic chip) laptop; WinXP Home SP3 up to date, with ~40 other processes running.
All three editors were launched from an external USB HDD; I have a Scite installation on my internal HDD as well, but wanted to keep the comparisons as fair as possible.
* I'm almost sure the slow first launch from JEdit is caused by starting the JRE.
Currently, I'm using JEdit for my NaNo project (mostly because I'm doing "HardCoreRenO" and writting all the code within this week
I used to work with Scite; although I'd really prefer N++ if I could hook it to the launcher and get propper syntax highlighting. After all, I'm using N++ for almost everything else (excluding C#, which I do from the Visual Studio IDE 'cause the solution explorer opens the files there
I'd love to provide further tests and details, but time is short... especially when I cut it off to less than a quarter for a tougher challenge ^^; I'll try to do some extensive testings (and maybe even try to configure N++) as soon as I'm done with the NaNo project.
I have failed to meet my deadlines so many times I'm not announcing my projects anymore. Whatever I'm working on, it'll be released when it is ready
Re: Notepad++
I think that the upshoot of the whole issue is that while 4-5 seconds don't seem like much (hey, games or office suites can take upwards of minutes sometimes, right?), a simple text editor just doesn't have any excuse for being that slow, especially not when all it does is display a traceback or the like. Which is why I don't use jEdit. Pretty much any other text editors manages it so fast that I can hardly notice the delay.
The rest is left as an exercise for the reader.

Re: Notepad++
The weird thing is that my copy of JEdit connects to itself, so once it has started additional windows are fast. Do you have some sort of firewall running?
It's pretty common for a text editor to take at least a few seconds to start up, once you leave the notepad/scite trivial end of the range.

Do you not?PyTom wrote: Do you have some sort of firewall running?
As it goes, though, I'm pretty sure I've not seen any warning messages asking me if I want to allow JEdit to connect to anything or allow incoming connections. Although frankly, if I'd downloaded some random VN engine I'd not come across before off the web and my firewall started asking if I wanted to allow random connections my default response would have been "no; delete".
I'll try and remember to race JEdit against Visual Studio this evening. But since here at work VS2008 takes less than a second to open up on a VPC running on a computer that's less powerful than my home desktop, I doubt it would come out in JEdit's favour.PyTom wrote: It's pretty common for a text editor to take at least a few seconds to start up, once you leave the notepad/scite trivial end of the range.
