how to set a main menu image

its called main_menu.jpg and i put it in images and its in the gui and all of that but it keeps coming up with
"while loading <'image' u'gui/main_menu.png>:
couldnt find 'gui/main_menu.png'. "

there's no mm_root anywhere which is what a bunch of people online said so what am i supposed to do? i tried replacing the default main_menu in gui and that does absolutely nothing so can someone help pls...
sorry if this makes no sense, there's just absolutely nothing online so ive decided to come here. no idea how to format on here, but yep.

That's because your main_menu.jpg it's not in the "gui" folder. It's on the "images" folder. You have to put it like this: gui/images/main_menu.jpg, or just images/main_menu.jpg

I think the real issue is the file extension.
You say your file is main_menu.jpg, but renpy is looking for main_menu.png
