Character on_character event callback

I am thinking of implementing the logic in https://golen.nu/portal/phoenix/ but it presently needs to get the letters and keep track of them as it is progressing. In addition it has some special characters (which I think can be replaced by a { tag } ) to have a brief pause with no audio.

However, it seems to require access to the character stream which is not exposed on the Character callback function, is it possible to tweak it so that it the logic can be added?
