Making Character Sprites Bigger Then Smaller?

Hello!
Quick question: Having trouble getting character sprites to get "big" when they are talking and then "small/normal size" when another character is talking.
Tried it a few different ways but it either keeps the original image once the size goes back to normal size or it doesn't look correct. Does anyone have some easy recommendations? I know what "xoom" does but not how to make the animation smooth.
