Bad performance with movie displayables in screens

I am currently working on a superhero game where the player gets to use their powers on various objects. To make this gameplay element look as good as possible, I am trying to incorporate animated effects into a screen by using movie displayables, but am experiencing significant lag using just one displayable and CTDs when using three or more.
I'm using a WebM/VP9 codec in an Ogg container (.ogv file format), and all displayables have the same framerate (30fps). This should be fine according to the documentation. It shouldn't be a computer performance issue as I am running it on a pretty decent gaming computer.
It's also not terribly heavy movies, with the files for all movies I have tried being less than 1 Mb combined.
Is there anything in particular I should think about when using movie displayables in screens?
