Registerin Atom Editor instead installing an outdated one from the Renpy site

#1 Post by felsenstern » Mon Nov 23, 2020 3:59 am

Hiya,

I've tried to update the Atom editor but instead of an update I ended up with two versions of Atom now installed on my system and with RenPy launcher completely ignoring the newer version of Atom.

I've already completely removed RenPy including all preferences files, registry entries and dependencies but when I re-install RenPy again and try to register Atom at Text Editor it again starts a download instead of using the already installed Atom (with all RenPy plugins installed).

Am I doing something wrong or is RenPy launcher simply ignoring an already installed Atom editor?

If I'm not mistaken the Atom editor that renpy integrates is actually an overhaul of the original Atom editor. So it is actually a little bit different from the original Atom editor. You can possibly just set your renpy launcher to use the system text editor then set up your up-to-date Atom editor as your default system text editor.

Unfortunately, using Atom as the default system text editor doesn't integrate the Atom editor in the way it should (No open project). I already thought about trying out to install an older Version of Ren'py register the newer version of Atom, then upgrade to a recent version of Ren'py and hope that the registration of the new Atom persists... lots of work though.

That issue can be solved easily. I myself only using a system editor instead of the editors suggested by renpy. What I usually do is just open the base folder, then just right-click the opened folder (right-clicking in an empty space) then in the context menu there's an option to open the folder with the editor. Most editors offer integration with the context menu where you can open the folder into the text editor directly. There are plenty of ways to address that, you can even pin your workspace in your taskbar too, so I think you shouldn't bother about it too much.

I wish I could do that, but it feels just faulty and stupid. Maybe there are reasons why they did it that way, but from my point of view it's just bad. Thanks a lot for your help and yes, I can use a couple of workarounds to work with the new Atom and I already did, but right now my mind is just focused on cleaning out this problem, hard to concentrate on working on my RenPy project as long as this is on my mind.

"Integration" means quite nothing. You can click the "open folder" button and the launcher will use a command line to launch the editor with all the rpy scripts there. That's "integration".
It does nothing more than this, and is the same exact number of clicks that launching your own Atom (that should be already set to open the last folders).

If you already own Atom, there's no need to download another copy since the start. And to be honest, there's not even any reason to use the launcher to trigger Atom or open any script, if you'll know what you're doing.
It's more of a n00b option for people that doesn't even knows what an editor is.

Hope this give you some relief and help you focus back again to your game.

Do you mean "open folder" inside of Atom? Yes, that's what I'm using but it still makes no sense that there is no way to register an already installed version of Atom inside the launcher, especially when it's so easy to do it. And btw. I'm a RenPy n00b and if I knew what I'm doing I wouldn't have a reason to ask for help.
