How to pick which layer text is drawn on
Howdy, I'm not sure if I'm just using incorrect terminology or if I'm missing something obvious, but I cannot seem to figure this out. I have a character portrait that sits on top of the usual text box but I can't seem to get the engine to draw a line of text above this image.
(sample image, The black ribbon on the frame should say "Suzy")

You're using a side image for that character. That image will always be on top of the say screen and therefore dialogue and the namebox. If you want to show Suzy's name inside that ribbon, then make that part of the side image transparent. And inside the namebox of the say screen put the background of the ribbon in.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.
P.S. Love the look of that skeleton.

You need to edit screens.rpy file and make sure that line add SideImage() in say screen is placed before namebox window declaration.
