[SOLVED] Multilingual Audio is working—but only English text is showing now!

#1 Post by Kaji »

So based on the method outlined in this thread, I recorded parallel Japanese and English audio files and placed them in the proper locations in the main and TL directories.

The good news is that the process works! The audio matches whatever is set in config.language.

The downside is that it seems to forget that the scripts have been translated, and shows English text in spite of Japanese translations being available. The rest of the interface is in Japanese, as it should be.

Here are copies of the original script and its translation file, should anyone wish to try to recreate the issue:

Code: Select all

label dumb_programmer_start:
    scene bg stage

    show sensei at center
    voice "audio/voice/dumb_programmer/dumb_programmer0001.ogg"
    "So, this is embarrassing..."

    show sensei at zoom_out
    voice "audio/voice/dumb_programmer/dumb_programmer0002.ogg"
"It seems the programmer forgot to specify which story to load when you touched that."

    show sensei at bounce
    voice "audio/voice/dumb_programmer/dumb_programmer0003.ogg"
    "We’re sorry!"

    return

Code: Select all

# NOTE: Translation updated at 2022-11-22 07:03

# game/scripts/admin/dumb_programmer.rpy:8
translate ja dumb_programmer_start_88f3c693:

    # "So, this is embarrassing..."
    "{rb}恥{/rb}{rt}は{/rt}ずかしいなぁ〜"

# game/scripts/admin/dumb_programmer.rpy:11
translate ja dumb_programmer_start_18b5308f:

    # "It seems the programmer forgot to specify which story to load when you touched that."
    "プログラマーはそれを{rb}触{/rb}{rt}さわ{/rt}るとどの{rb}噺{/rb}{rt}はなし{/rt}をロードしようと{rb}設定{/rb}{rt}せってい{/rt}するのは{rb}忘{/rb}{rt}わす{/rt}れたそうですね・・・"

# game/scripts/admin/dumb_programmer.rpy:14
translate ja dumb_programmer_start_ab486934:

    # "We’re sorry!"
    "{rb}申{/rb}{rt}もう{/rt}し{rb}訳{/rb}{rt}わけ{/rt}ありません!"

(In case anyone's wondering, it's a script from an old project that I had set to load in case of an error—it made a convenient short script for testing things out.)

BTW, just in case it has any bearing on the issue, the full path is specified for the audio files instead of just the name because RenPy refuses to see any of my audio files unless I doso.

Try to regenerate translation files and see if there are new entries for these lines. Maybe their ID changed because of some significant edit?

That did it! Didn't recognize that translation IDs were so sensitive. Guess it's a good thing I've started organizing the translations and performance notes in a spreadsheet.

On a related note, is it possible to have the "canonical" language (from a translations) perspective be, say, Japanese, while the default language remains English? In this project the Japanese scripts are pretty well finalized, it's the nuances in how things get translated that really drives a lot of changes.
