Doesn't HD movie just means it have very big resolution? So it doesn't matter which codec you use... I have avi and mkv HD anime movies.

Hrm, I thought "high definition" referred to the level of compression. Even if it's very high-resolution, if the AVI compression is so large that you can't tell what's happening, it's not really HD as such (or so I thought).
I don't think Ren'Py supports any of the HD codecs I'm aware of, but with my limited knowledge of video compression, I think MPEG is probably the highest-quality of the usable ones.

Wrong. Resolution is how many pixels wide and tall it is. Any of those formats are usable for HD movies but with trade offs for file size due to encoding efficiency and other qualities. Those are the ones most used for HD movies anyhow though. I suggest an MP4 based format. MKV mp4 AVI....
