A random little sketch with the tablet that came out like this. It was random scribbles at first though. That's how the street was formed.

I am officially jealous. Your scribbles look better than my best.pkt wrote:A random little sketch with the tablet that came out like this. It was random scribbles at first though. That's how the street was formed.
What resolution do you draw at?

1000x1000 pixels usually. I used to work with my mouse for years though so don't feel so bad. And some other self study. A can go higher but I don't really have much of a grasp on most artistic concepts from a non self taught manner. I can answer questions though.

@ Bowling pin, On pics 1,4,5 I want to know how you did those. They are really good and interesting. Work on anatomy a little bit though.

I have finally finish coloring my line art. Sorry for the lack of background. Comments and critiques always welcome.

Re: Art Dumpage! Show your art ^^
Thank you. It's a little hard to narrow down what I did in those pictures since they were made at different times with different techniques, but I'll try to share my approach.pkt wrote:@ Bowling pin, On pics 1,4,5 I want to know how you did those. In pic #4 (butterfly), which I actually made around six years ago, I took a grainy screencap of a picture of a girl I knew. I then traced what I could of her and made something of a vector, except in pixel art. I then added the butterfly wings and enlarged that pixel art onto a canvas with a picture of a field I found. After that, I added lots of patterns and textures and got this. If I were to make this today, I probably would have painted and defined the field background some more.
In pic #5 (field), I took a lot of reference photos which barely even remain in the final picture and painted over them, reducing those pictures' opacity levels to barely visible. I tossed a lot of assorted shapes together to see what looked nice as a composition, and then started throwing broad strokes of color. Afterward, I put in some very light, low opacity, very soft blotches of color which I blended into the canvas with soft lights, which produced much of the lighting in the final picture. This had more of a speed paint approach.
Pic #1 is another exercise in lighting that I wanted to give a street art look to. First off, the character is just a screencap of a model from Poser. I resized that, threshold, got a shadow impression I wanted to use that looks like stencil graffiti. There are ink splatter brushes used at the top of the picture. In the background there's a green structure with lines hatched onto it like scratches. I played with a lot of layer mask settings and blend styles to get what I wanted. This one took maybe an hour tops though.
I hope that's been helpful.

@ Lolita_soft You're off to a good start. I don't know much about soft cell shading, but you should probably work on your anatomy a little more. Also it's helpful to draw the feet to keep the character planted and balanced. Also the face looks a bit awkward. Hope I was helpful.

I guess while not being as challenging as Photoshop is for lineart, I'm more comfortable illustrating in Manga Studio than in Photoshop.

Looked through my old pictures in Photobucket and decided to redraw a character and do a side-by-side comparison. (So those of you starting to draw don't give up, but don't expect to immediately be good either. Work hard! )
