The Groozle

#1 Post by Grimble »

My first attempt at this. It was intended as a quick experiment just to see if I could do an interactive adventure for my nephew. It got a little bit out of hand ... as these things do.

Anyway, it's not exactly cutting edge but it's reasonably entertaining, I reckon. And it's entirely random so you can play it again and again until you're thoroughly sick of it. (Probably 3 times at the most!)

Good luck! :D

(Now with added music!!!)

Ooh not bad. The donut system worked well as a gameplay mechanic for a visual novel like this and the art style was really nostalgic for me :)

Thanks! I'd like to do more of this stuff but I know for a fact I'm never going to find the time.

Glad you liked the doughnuts!

That was a lot of fun. XD I think it's a clever game, and your use of animations and other nifty Ren'py features is pretty sweet. I'm hungry for donuts, now. o_o
Also, I forgot I had my speakers on, so the Groozle noise freaked me out. @^@

For your first attempt, this is great! The art style and story are charming and whimisical and it has a very original concept. Great presentation and you utilized a lot of what Ren'Py has to offer. Overall, job well done. I'm sure your nephew must love this!
Also, I had a very similar experience as sake-bento, and the timer on choosing one of the heads to give a doughnut to made me panic. XD

That was cute, I loved it <3
I agree that some music would have made it even better, but I enjoyed that :3

Thanks for the comments folks. Much appreciated.

Now that you mention music, I can definitely see how that could add to the atmosphere of the game. I shall bear it in mind in the future. Besides, it's a good excuse to make use of my grade 3 piano skills. :)

We have music!

At first I wasn't sure whether I could be bothered to add music to this. but this morning I woke up with a reasonably annoying tune going round in my head so I got up and got it recorded (thanks Garageband!) and added it to the game. I think it's better with the music, others may disagree.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Pretty nice game. Though since the game is short, I recommend to disable the save feature. Why? Since when I play the game (for the first time, in the first try), I just bust through straight to the end of the dungeon, save, and just randomly pick head. Perhaps I'm lucky, I managed to get it right on my third donuts (and I still have four at that time, missing one donut because of the wild boar).

You should make it that if you play through the game and lose, it doesn't tell you which head is the right one.
Makes for more of a challenge.

Enjoyed this. The artwork and writing were very appealing and your use of Renpy features worked with simplicity and charm. If you were to make another, I wonder if there might be a way to recover from player errors within the game, ie to go back to the start and get another bag of doughnuts without being eaten?

Hello there

Really enjoyed your game. Well done. I really love the randomness in your game.

I am currently developing one myself, and need a bit of help with some coding. I have a menu system with three options (option 1, 2 and 3) which jumps to three different scenes (scene 1, 2 and 3). Now how can I make each option select a random scene?

I would really appreciate the help if you can.

Thanks

Chris
