Languages!

#1 Post by choklitchan »

I notice a lot of people here aren't native English speakers.
Do you speak multiple languages?

Is English your first language?
Second?
Third?
more???

I was just curious, seeing as so many people here speak other languages besides English. :D
What languages do you speak?
Post in the order you learned them in, and then by how well you know them. For example, myself:

1. Hiligaynon (My native tongue; a Filipino dialect)
2. English (my best, actually)
3. Spanish (learning in school)
4. Japanese (learning on my own)

I thought it might be interesting to see where everyone comes from. :D

Completely unsurprising, the English editor's native language is English! Well, American, if you really want to get picky; not the Queen's English.

1. American English (Native and a language I'd say I've mastered.)
2. Japanese (Studied it for 4 years, retained very little.)
3. Chinese (I think I remember one or two phrases.)
4. Arabic (People keep trying to teach me phrases, and I keep forgetting them.)

I'd say the only one I know with any decency is English.

1. Indonesian (a native speakier, since this is my country main language after all)
2. English (a secondary language in my country, and since this is one of the international language, it's taught in my school)
3. Sundanese (a local language, again, taught in my school)
4. Chinese (but I've forgot like 99% of them since it's been more than 15 years since the last time I use it, I studied this at off-school courses)

Sadly, being raised in the US where kids don't learn a second language until high school, I know:
1. English (probably my best academic subject).

I had like... two years of Spanish in high school, of which I remember surprisingly a lot, but it was still just the basics for those two years. Now that I work with a lot of Spanish-speaking people (some can speak English, some not so much) I really wish I knew more.

I'm also teaching myself Japanese, but I wouldn't say I speak it, although I've gotten to the point where I start shuddering a little bit when listening to Japanese songs because I suddenly realize I can understand what the song is about. I love that feeling...
"It is [the writer's] privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart,
by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride
and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past."
— William Faulkner

1. English
2. German (<- almost fluent at one point, can still read it alright)
3. Japanese (<- miserable speaker, listener... but can read a bit more)
4. A touch of Hebrew. I'm not Jewish, but I thought it would be cool to take in my college years!

2) English - Was born and I am living in a English speaking country.
3) French - Been learning it in school for 3-4 years.
4) Japanese- Learnt it in school for 4 years and now self studying with the help of my Japanese friends. c:
5) Dutch - I pick it up from my friends and know how to have a very very simple conversation.

1. English. (I am Canadian, so I spell out words like doughnut with more letters than some deem necessary.)
2. French. (I took my mandatory five years of French. I remember nothing other than a few phrases.)
3. Japanese (I took three years in highschool because I was sick of French. I retained little other than to report various parts of my anatomy are hurting or how to say that I have a cold. Um... let's just say I missed a lot of school.)

Languages I want to learn but probably never will:
Icelandic
German
Arabic
Hebrew

1. American English
2.Latin Spanish (Three years of collective training and all I can recall is how to greet, ask for the bathroom and say what I like.)
3. Japanese ( Mix of self training and too much anime/J Drama subs. Nowhere close to speaking or even reading the stuff.)

Wow, I'm impressed. Everyone here speaks many languages! Despite being trilingual (sort of), I feel rather inadequate.

1. English (Canadian, then American) - while not technically my first language, it's probably my best, which is why I put it first.
2. Spanish - But I've forgotten a lot since I don't use it much anymore.
3. Gujarati - My first language, but I can only speak it (I'm illiterate).
