I've been thinking... with the NaNoRenO coming, maybe this should be stickied... considering that it is a group of resources and programs that could be used for making music, graphics, and games. the only thing that's missing from the list is renpy, which can be accessed from it's appropriate section (or American Bishoujo, for the people who are too lazy to go to the announcement thread for the latest version.)

so... sticky?

I didn't see these posted, so here's some other free graphic tools:

Pixia
ArtRage

Microsoft still offers Acrylic (which used to be called Expression) as a free preview.

Freeware
RoughDraft 3.0 -- an alternative to using Microsoft Word for writing your script, and has optional dictionary and thesaurus add-ons.
Caveats: Windows only. Requires printer settings installed on your machine, but it can be faked if you don't have a printer (or have it hooked up to a different machine instead).

Shareware
Universe -- a tool for creating realistic-looking space and night sky images. A few additional image tools are disabled in the trial version, but the ones available are more than sufficient for dabbling, and it's not crippleware or seppukuware (two things that REALLY irritate me), hence the recommendation.
http://www.diardsoftware.com/index.html

(Just in case: crippleware -- important features such as "Save" disabled; seppukuware -- programs that have a trial lifespan insufficient to get a good grasp of the program and then (basically) die at the end of the trial period. "This program will self-destruct in 5...4...")

Found a nice place to search for sound effects. Only problem, it doesn't host/own the files directly so there's a question of use allowance.

Not sure if this is fit for the thread, but anyway...

Can anyone recommened a free music video creator? I had the idea of making opening and closing MPEG vids along the lines of this. All it is is image transitions put to music. Another example.:P

Otherwise, does anyone know if Adobe Premire Elements would work?

Free, hmmm, on Windows XP, if you already have a bunch of clips or images you want to string together, you could try Windows Movie Maker? It's under Start -> Programs -> Accessories, and near the bottom. I'm not sure how extensive the transition options are, though. [Edit, I just checked, there are quite a few.]

It's not free, but I use Sony Vegas Movie Studio, and very much like it.

You could also try The Gimp (Linux and Windows, free); the version I have right now has video support (can't remember if I had to download that seperately, sorry) but I haven't used the video part much. I think you'd have to make the clips in a separate program, though.

If you give up on the fancy effects and just use fades/dissolves and moving characters in front of bgs, you could just make it using RenPy scripting.

In a late reply to TMBpower post, you'll find that SWISH (although it's not really free) does the job nicely if you just want to use image transitions for a music vid. You can export it to avi and re-encode the file to mpg format later.
How do you make your games? I see. Thank you for the prompt replies, but it is my considered opinion that you're doing it wrong inefficiently because I am a perfushenal professional. Do it my way this way and we can all ascend VN Nirvana together while allowing me to stroke my ego you will improve much faster. Also, please don't forget to thank me for this constructive critique or I will cry and bore you to death respond appropriately with a tl;dr rant discourse of epic adequately lengthy proportions. - Sarcasm Veiled in Euphemism: Secrets of Forum Civility by lordcloudx (Coming soon to an online ebook near you.)

Some music sites I've been meaning to mention:

http://ccmixter.org/
http://www.acidplanet.com/
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/index.php (lots of free sound effects, I think)
http://www.incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/ (some good free piano music)
http://www.flashkit.com/loops/ (this one looks really good!)
http://www.freeplaymusic.com/ (some good music, but I think it can't be legally included in a game without paying a fee)

This one here
http://www.flashkit.com/loops/
looks really good. Ton's of free loops, and the majority is freeware. Attribute the artist in your game, and you're done!
