Rose of Versailles

#1 Post by ririruetoo »

Anyone watch it? Comments, or reviews you would like to share? I've been wanting to watch it for a while, so I want to see what other people think of it.

WATCH IT.

Do not wait a day longer, watch it.
It's one of my favorite series.

What I really love about it is that it is, as I like to say, "the manliest shoujo anime ever." The heroine is a cross-dressing girl who can fight on equal/better level as men, there are bar brawls, barracks brawls... and it still manages to be an incredibly romantic and heart-wrenching show.

Just keep in mind that the show switched directors midway; it starts off very melodramatic and "princess-y", focusing a lot of time on Marie Antoinette, but it shifts gears, so if at the beginning you think you don't like it as much as you thought you might, just keep watching...

I'm not entirely sure. The series follows the main character Oscar from when she is a palace guard for Marie Antoinette to when she starts doing other things outside of the palace. Since the first half of the show is focused on inter-palace drama and the second half is more action-oriented, I tend to think it was purposeful.

It aired in CS(forgot what specific channel it was) and I haven't watched it. :( Er, its not because i don't like it, but because i know(have read the manga few years ago) that damn,
the guy will die! TT_TT
, seriously, I'm never up for dramas, so I'm passing on this one.

It's true that its recommendable though. :D

If you know a little about the era Rose of Versailles is set in, you KNOW what sort of ending this is going to be... Watch it anyway.

Or if you don't know anything about the era it's set in, watch it anyway. :P

I hardly knew anything about the French Revolution before I watched it and it made me interested to learn more about it. Also, because of this show, I picked the Palace of Versailles as a topic for a paper about architecture for an art history class and learned a lot about that in the process too.

There should be more historical anime...

Judging by the timeframe, the original director passed away 3-4 months into the series run, so I don't think the change was planned.

Anyway, I haven't seen the entire series yet. However, I've read that the mangaka originally focussed on Marie Antoinette but shifted to Oscar because of the latter's surprising popularity.

To my knowledge it was never licensed in the USA (which, considering some of the stuff that DID make it over here, is sacrilege in my book) but Live-Evil did a very nice English fansub.

(It's not against forum rules to recommend fansubs, right?)

I think I watched it several episodes when they aired it in my local TV station (I was still like a school-grader back then) and they localized the manga too. While I don't really hate it (still could enjoy it), but it's just not my type of show. Plus I don't like the RL Marie Antoinette, so...
