Ren'Py GP2X Port?

#1 Post by Kevadu »

Is there any interest in this? In case you're not familiar with it, the GP2X ( http://gp2x.co.uk/ ) is a relatively obscure handheld console made by a company called Gamepark Holdings. The big difference between it an most consoles is that it is a completely open platform (runs Linux) which actively encourages homebrew gaming. Check out the GP2X file archive for examples of what's already out there: http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi

I have one and it's a really cool piece of hardware. I've thought ever since I got it that it would be a very nice platform for Ren'Py games. I've also been interested in getting involved with GP2X development, so porting Ren'Py seems like a natural thing to try. I am curious what others (particularly Py'Tom) think of that idea. I should note that I don't actually have any experience doing GP2X development, but hey, you've got to start somewhere. SDL and Python have already been ported, so most of the hard work should be done.

Hm... I would suspect that with pygame being ported to the gp2x, Ren'Py would run out-of-the box, albeit in a fairly limited mode. You'd need to port the renpy module (and it's dependencies) to restore full functionality, but probably about 90% of Ren'Py will work out of the box.

Now, that's just the engine. A second issue is that Ren'Py games run at high resolutions (640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 are all resolutions that have been used), and you'll need to modify the game to make it work at 320x240.

Still reading up a little on the gp2x, I don't think it would be that hard. Let me know if you try it, and if it works or if you get stuck.

?

GP2X is not so obscure, I had never used a Handheld and I know this for some time now. With that sound and video support it can be a good idea.

Sorry, something weird must have happened.

Well, GP2X doesn't have the user-base of the more established handhelds (like GBA, DS, and PSP). I've been aware of it for a while, but it's probably not something I would plan on investing in, since while I know of the handheld, I offhand can't name any games for it.

it is. Watch some DVDs on those 320x240 portable DVD players and you'll see.
