[KN] Frequencies (Slice of Supernatural Life)

#1 Post by Morhighan »

Image
Title: Frequencies
Style: Kinetic Novel
Genre: Slice of Supernatural Life
Playtime: About 15 minutes.

Plot:
Elliot, our protagonist, finds an odd pair of headphones. By using the headphones his eyes are opened and his life is changed. However, everything has a price.
The game contains 93 screens of dialogue.
These screens contain a total of 2,554 words,
for an average of 27.5 words per screen.
Story by: Morhighan
Sprites by: Niki
Music by: Morhighan
Sound effects: 07th Expansion
Backgrounds: Mao Space

Note
There is an error with using the exit button to close it. I'm trying to fix it. However, if you read it all the way through, it should work if you hit the "stop/eject" button. That will properly close it. I'm leaving it open so that people can look at the script and help me figure out what's wrong.

Thank you for reading, I would love to hear feedback! :D

Okay, so I read through it and I must say it was good! The story is interesting and original and the sprite of the MC is really cool. Also, the simplicity works, even though I think it would be better if the names of the characters appeared, since the dialogue was a bit confusing at times. And I guess you could elaborate a bit more on the story itself, but it suits the character to keep it brief, I think.

So congrats on releasing this game! I enjoyed playing it.

Thank you for reading! It is pretty simple, and I've been struggling with how short is it. I definitely want to continue the story eventually. I think this is probably just a prologue. :)

Before I continue, I feel that I must give you this:
Image

Use it well.

The Good:
-The story was very unique, and the way you went about it was also interesting.
Nice of you to use the modern bully routine. A lot of people who write bullies in their stories always go with the old 80's style bullies
-The Main character sprite was pretty *.*
-Main Menu misc was nice and catchy

The Bad:
-Tranisitons could have helped with the pace of the story. It feels jumpy as it is right now.
-The game is eerily silent besides the sound effects. Maybe a low ambient tune could have added a bit of background?
-The sprite is much smaller than the screen,
=====
For your first completed game, it's a very good read~

Thank you very much for reading! :D

HigurashiKira--((Ee, I love your story ideas, yaaay.))
I've never gotten 1000 internets before. :o Or internets period! Woohoo!
I was nervous about the modern insults used, but I'm glad they seemed realistic!
I couldn't think of a theme that would be consistent to the story. But the sound effects made me jump out of my skin sometimes, so I wanted to share that experience~ XD I may adjust the sprite if I find the time. :3 I'll definitely remember the jumpiness bit for my next story.

Carosene--
Thank you Carosene! :D Niki did a great job. ^^
That was so much fun for me to make~ Thank you!

Awesome! :O
The was a nice and short little KN.
I really liked the story idea and how you presented it.

There were only a very few minor issues where the writing didn't seem to flow and it was a bit confusing without knowing who excatly was speaking in the dialogue boxes. Also the same thing as HigurshiKira said. I felt quite frightened while reading this KN since it was in the middle of the night and the thumping noise... Well, sounded rather eerie at that time.

None the less, that was an interesting read. >w<

That was a nice little KN! I liked the story of it and the lesson that it taught. A few things to consider:

- The sprite was a lot smaller compared to the rest of the window, which threw me off a little
- It was hard to tell who was speaking sometimes with the non-labeled dialogue
- The lack of transitions stood out to me
- I would have liked to control the text speed, as having it all come out as a big paragraph made it hard for me to focus/for the writing to flow

But overall I really liked it. I wasn't sure where the story was going to go for a bit there, but the ending wrapped everything up really nicely and, again, I like the message here.

Yay! I was waiting for this! >w<

And I must say that I liked it. :3 However- I share the opinions of the others about the lil issues in the KN. No need to repeat them, I just think that this could be greatly improved into something a lot better, because it has the potential!

Thank you all! I quite agree on your points. I'll keep an eye out on that for my next project. :3
Would any of you be interested in a sequel to the story?

The quit button problem comes from not calling any theme function in options.rpy. See the tutorial's options.rpy for info on how that should work.

Since you asked for help on the error... here's the fix...

And I would advice you to read through the imagemap documentation once more...

Now I'm off to play the game... ^.^

As PyTom pointed out, you needed to call a theme.roundrect function...
But since you were not using themes in your game, an empty function was all you needed...
theme.roundrect(
)

And also, you pointed to an image called yesno_ground.png, when it didn't exist in your game folder...

Finished. What can I say? Nothing bad, nothing good, rather medicore KN. Idea for the plot wasn't bad, but I'm expecting bit more when it comes to kinetic novels. Sinces it was your first project, I can guess you were learning here, how to make such games. I think you have a potential for making something better than this, so keep on try it. I just posted my full review of this game at my blog.
