Need Sprite Art Feedback

#1 Post by Dharma Fish »

I'm working on sprites for Gage's Time stones project. This is my first finished sprite. Any feedback is appreciated. The game will be 600x800 res.

Hmm. It looks like a rough sketch more than a finished product.

His anatomy is pretty off, infact the legs look like they're broken- you should use a reference like this: http://image.shutterstock.com/display_p ... 726085.jpg The feet also don't have any shape. each foot is pointing in a very unnatural way.

As for the shading it's pretty messy. Try to smooth it out by using softer lower-opacity brushes.

Thanks for the advice, I do use a reference but sometimes it's easy to miss stuff when you stare at the same drawing for too long. That's why I ask for feedback. I don't think it's the legs so much looking at my reference as his left foot (screen right) is just off kilter. Shouldn't be to hard to fix. I wonder if applying a Gaussian blur would clean up the shading or just make it to soft. It seems like good shading is always finding a balance between hard and soft lines. Easy to say but harder to implement. Thanks again.

It's not good to use a filter to shade, it will look really sloppy. You should do it manually. Here's a tut: http://www.3dluvr.com/content/article/49/1
